Yukinobu Tatsu, the mangaka ofDandadan, has gone above and beyond while creating the series. From the characters to the plot, nothing is short of unique. The author has made sure that the series stands out from the rest of the anime in the supernatural genre.

According toYukinobu Tatsu, supernatural phenomena are not evil. Thus, he draws supernatural creatures like yokai as well as aliens to make them visually appealing. The mangaka loves the special effects used in the old series since they have an ingenuity and handmade feel to them. Inan interview, Tatsu stated:
I personally believe that a design should make you go ‘Wow!’ the moment you see it. So in ‘Dandadan’ I’m pushing the boundaries in that regard.
Both the aliens and yokai inDandadanhave unique designs. The author doesn’t simply pick up ghosts from Japanese folklore, but he also gives them his own spin. This is what makes theDandadanvillains so appealing to its audience. They are refreshing and done in a way that has never been attempted before.
WhileOne Punch Manhas previously shown some really good alien design, it never walked into the yokai category. Yukinobu Tatsu, on the other hand, has gone beyond conventional yokai designs and created something unique, while attaching suitable backstories to them.
Dandadanauthor wants to give fans hope with his aliens and monsters
Most authors like conveying hope and joy to fans through their protagonists, who are fighting demons or monsters. But Yukinobu Tatsu chose to go against this trend and used the supposed villains of the story to convey hope.
The author explained that many of the elements in the monster stories fromDandadanare inspired by tragic events from the past. But he wanted to make it more entertaining and fun. The monsters were once humans, and they never wanted to turn out like wandering ghosts. To him, they don’t feel like villains since he sees them aspeople struggling with their own conflicts.
The monsters and aliens inDandadanmight first appear as a threat to Okarun and his gang. But each of them has a tragic background or a reason behind why they are pursuing their respective goals.Acrobatic Silky is in search of her daughter, who was taken away from her, whileMr. Mantis Shrimp worked as a hired fighterfor the Serpo to earn money for his son’s blood transfusion.
Once the battles with the aliens and yokai are over, there is a glimpse of hope if the enemies themselves can somehow be saved or redeemed. According to Tatsu, it would be too sad if there was no hope. Since it’s entertainment, he likes ending the stories by giving readers assurance and optimism.
