The upcomingFalloutseries continues the adaptation of popular video games to TV and films. 2023 was a great year for video game adaptations as bothThe Super Mario Bros. MovieandThe Last of Uswere huge successes and audiences connected to the adapted material. The makers behind Amazon’sFalloutseries hope to keep that successful streak going.

The series is developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan who previously co-created the hit HBO sci-fi seriesWestworld. Nolan was committed to developing an original story for the series instead of doing a shot-by-shot adaptation of the games. Nolan compared this process to when he co-wrote the Batman films with his brother Christopher Nolan.
Jonathan Nolan Compares His Approach forFalloutto His Time Writing Batman
Jonathan Nolan is gearing up for the release of his next ambitious seriesFallout, based on the popular video game series of the same name. He is developing the series along with frequent collaborator Lisa Joy, with whom he didWestworld. In a recent interview with Total Film (viaGamesRadar), the creator/director talked about his approach to adapting the games for TV.
“We’ve barely scratched the surface”: Fallout Looks Set to Stay after Showrunner Comments
Nolan stated that he and Todd Howard, the development chief at Bethesda (the studio behind the games) always wanted to tell an original story with the show, just like the different entries in the game. He compared the writing process to how he and his brother Christopher Nolan wrote theBatmanfilms.
He explained by saying that there is so much mythology surrounding Batman that they can pick and choose which elements to put in their new treatment of the material. Similarly, he teased that the series would feel like a newFalloutgame, reminiscent of the previous games but telling a new story in the universe. He said,

“From the first conversation with Todd [Howard, Bethesda development chief and executive producer on the show] we were most excited about an original story. Fallout, in my career, is closest to the work we did in adapting Batman, where there’s so much storytelling in the Batman universe that there is no canonical version of it, so you’re free to invent your own.
“Each of the [Fallout] games is a discrete story – different city, distinct protagonist – within the same mythology. Our series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other. It’s almost like we’re Fallout 5. I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but it’s just a non-interactive version of it, right?”

The trailer promised several elements from the game that fans will recognize but aims to tell a fresh story. Nolan’s comments are exciting as the series will be a fresh experience for both gamers and general audiences alike from a narrative point of view. It remains to be seen whether Nolan sticks the landing with the series when it premieres next month.

Nolan stated that the show would have some comedic elements and it was his first foray into comedy. He tried to find the right balance between humor and drama that complimented each other and elevated the motivations of the characters. Doing this every day on set was quite the challenge for Nolan as he said,
“Biggest challenge. Yeah, I think it was the tone. I think for me, this is the closest I’ve come in my career to comedy and I would say the comedy here is there in support of the drama as we talked about. I think finding that tone on the set every day, guiding it towards what we wanted the finished products to look like was definitely challenging.”

The series is set to star Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Walton Goggins in lead roles and will be set 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse in an alternate wasteland version of Los Angeles. The series will premiere on Amazon Prime on July 09, 2025.
