WhenStarfieldwas released back in September last year, many fans were divided in their opinion of it. Some saw it as the next big thing from Bethesda, whilst others simply dismissed the game as Skyrim in space. Whilst the latter comments may have been from disgruntled PlayStation owners who couldn’t experience it, it is a game that splits opinion.

Starfield

Despite this, many fans have experienced the space exploration game to its fullest and have spent countless hours out amongst the stars. However, for those fans who perhaps have been curious about picking the game up and experiencing it for themselves, this could be the perfect time. If rumors are to be believed, then players could pick up a physical copy of the game for as little as 3 cents.

Walmart to sell heavily discounted copies of Starfield?

According to a post byAndrew Marmoon social media site X, it appears that Walmart intends to heavily reduce copies of the Xbox Series X game ofStarfieldstarting today (22 January). The deal runs until 5 February and states that players should help themselves to copies to help clear these titles before they are disposed of at store level.

It should be pointed out that this is (at the time of writing) unconfirmed and the information was shared with the OP on a public discord, as they do not reside in the US. That being said, the information that has been shared and the level of detail in the processes for staff seem to be too in-depth for this to be anything other than factual information.

Starfield

It’s a sad state of affairs to see that physical copies of video games would be destroyed rather than be recalled to the distributors but perhaps this is a telling statement of how many publishers are looking to move away from physical media. That being said, surely there must be some better option than just simply destroying the unsold copies ofStarfield?

Whilst many players were quick to point out that this could be a great opportunity to pick up several copies and sell them on a certain well-known auction site, others were perhaps slightly more cynical.

not shocking in the least given microsoft is moving towards an digital redesigning with the xbox series x and they want to push gamepass/xbox live more than selling physical games. This is what people have bought into for the past 8yrs and I hate to see it.

Many other people commenting on this thread were happy to condemnStarfieldto the grave, stating that it would be the best place for the game. Whether or not these were PlayStation who are still smarting that they never got to experience this on their platform, remains to be seen.

It should be noted from the Andrew Marmo post on X, that it states that the decision to implement this is coming from the supplier. It also goes on to state that stores will not be charged, if the merchandise is processed by 5 February. Therefore it would make sense for Walmart to try and get rid of as many copies ofStarfieldas it can without incurring any financial penalties for those unsold.

However, it appears that the legacy of physical video game copies is sadly declining. The days of holding an actual copy of an eagerly awaited game may become a thing of the past as some publishers consider making titles digital releases only. Whilst this inevitably may be a sign of the times, it does mean that you could bag a bargain with a physical copy of a game before even consoles become digital.
