Steven Spielberg had only one actor in mind to play the role of Harrison Ford’s dad role, an eccentric medieval literature professor, inIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Spielberg was a fan of Sean Connery’s work inJames Bondfilms. Connery initially turned down the role as he didn’t want to play any more franchise roles after Bond. However, he went on to have a lot of fun in the role.

Ford and Connery faced a few problems on set and theMurder on the Orient Expressactor had a particularly creative solution for one problem. The film was one of the well-received films in the franchise, with particular praise for its humor, emotional themes, and Ford & Connery’s performances.
Harrison Ford Had To Film AnIndiana JonesScene Without Pants Due to Sean Connery
Many scenes ofIndiana Jones and the Last Crusadewere filmed in the studio and there was one major problem that the cast had to manage. The weather in the studio didn’t often match what they had to shoot for the film. During one particular scene,Sean ConneryandHarrison Fordfound themselves in this problem.

The two actors had to film a scene in a zeppelin where the passengers had to wear fur coats since it was winter in the story. However, the studio where they filmed the scene turned out to be extremely hot. Connery and Ford’s scene took place in a crowded bar, which further made matters worse for them.
Connery had the perfect solution for the problem. He decided to go pantless in the scene. Connery revealed this in a making-of documentary of the film and added that Ford was initially not on board with the idea. Connery shared that if he had to keep his trousers on, he would have to stop due to sweating.

He eventually managed to convince Ford to follow through with this idea. Ford would’ve only kept on his famous leather jacket during this particular scene in the film. Connery shared (via The Digital Fix):
We played one of the scenes in the zeppelin, all the passengers were wearing fur coats and hats and it’s supposed to be in the wintertime. And I played it without my trousers. And Harrison says, ‘You’re not gonna play the scene without your trousers.’ I said, ‘Well, if I don’t I’ll be stopping all the time, because I sweat enormously, I sweat very easily.’ Well, he did the same.

TheConnery-Ford dynamics worked amazingly wellfor the film. It grossed $474 million at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1989 (via Box Office Mojo).
Sean Connery’s One Ad Lib Was Kept In The Film Because It Was So Funny
In the film, Alison Doody’s Dr. Elsa Schneider turned out to be a Nazi conspirator. She seduces the Joneses and had an encounter with them when they were captured by the Nazis. In one of the scenes, Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones asked his father how he knew Elsa was a spy. Henry Sr. responds,“She talks in her sleep.”

It was so funny since it hinted that Elsa slept with Henry Sr. too. Interestingly, thescene was ad-libbed by Sean Conneryand everyone on the set started laughing at his improvisation. Spielberg decided to keep it in his film (via Empire).
