It’s been a hot minute since George R.R. Martin gave us an update on his upcoming sixth novel,The Winds of Winter, and fans are not even sure that they will get their hands on the highly anticipated book anytime soon as the author struggles to finish it amid his hectic schedule.

There are so many things that fans are dying to know about the continuation of hisA Song of Ice and Fireseries since the last book left everyone hanging. Apart from the fact that it will reveal Jon Snow’s fate, it will also clear up the issue of who the real Aegon Targaryen is.
George R.R. Martin’sThe Winds of Winterwill set things straight regarding Aegon Targaryen
We’re already spoiled with the information that Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen inGame of Thrones, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. The book has a more complicated set-up that the television opted to omit to perhaps avoid confusion.
InA Song of Ice and Fire, there’s another character claiming to be Aegon:Young Griff. Of course, the showrunners left out this detail because two Aegons would complicate the story even more, and looking at how they handled the show, it would not make things any better.

So, the story starts with Rhaegar and his first wife, Elia Martell, the parents of Aegon, who was presumed to be The Prince That Was Promised. The baby was said to have been murdered by Ser Gregor Clegane duringRobert’s Rebellion, and this was the story that spread all across Westeros.
We meet Young Griff inA Dance with Dragonswho claims to be the real one. However, many aspects of this figure proved to be somewhat suspicious, eliciting strong reactions from fans and earning the nickname “fAegon” – a speculation that he isn’t a pure Targaryen at all but amember of the House Blackfyre.

Even Tyrion Lannister had doubts about Young Griff’s desire to marry Daenerys Targaryen since—if he’s the real Aegon—his claim is much stronger than that of the Mother of Dragons.
InGeorge R.R. Martin’s books, Jon Snow is still dead. We don’t know if the author plans to resurrect him the same way as in the show. If he returns to life, though, then there is a possibility that the Lord Commander will have a confrontation scene with Young Griff—and who knows, he might have been an impostor all along!

Why Young Griff wasn’t inGame of Thrones
Martin might have designed this tale of two Aegons to confuse fans, butThe Winds of Winteris expected to clarify things and put this case to rest. No one knows when the author will release the book since he hasn’t made any positive updates since the start of the year.

It’s still a shame that we never met Young Griff in the show. There was no more room for the character, and it was likely done to streamline the story and focus on Daenerys and Jon Snow’s plot.
Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
