The two brothers were orphaned at a young age after their parents Harold and Edith Barton died in a car crash. Placed in numerous foster homes, Clint and Barney eventually ran away and came across one of the star performers, Jacques DuQuesne also known as the Swordsman, after they took up odd jobs at the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonder as roustabouts.
