But out of the lot, the most famous would be his portrayal of eccentric lounge singer Vic Fontaine inStar Trek: Deep Space Nine. While the actor entered the show in its last two seasons, he created a name for himself that people would remember for generations to come.

The iconic actor recently passed away, and upon this, several of his past interviews are resurfacing, showcasing that more than an actor, he was a kind and emotional human being. He showcased the same compassionate gesture to hisDeep Space Nineco-star Nana Visitor that left her in tears.

The universe ofStar Trekis renowned for introducing a host of memorable characters and actors into its roster. This was precisely the case when the producers ofStar Trek: Deep Space Ninewere on the lookout to add a distinctive character to the show’s later seasons. They envisioned a charismatic, old-school holographic lounge singer named Vic Fontaine.
Their search brought in several notable names like Steve Goulet and Frank Sinatra, among others. However, James Darren stood out from the rest and ultimately landed the role. Theactorwas already well-acclaimed in the industry, known for his notable roles inThe Guns of Navaroneand theGidgetmovies. Additionally, his successful singing career made him the perfect choice to play Fontaine.

In a past interview, Darren discussed his experience working onDeep Space Nineand shared a special moment with actress Nana Visitor. He mentioned that his debut episode, titledHis Way, and the alternate universe episode,The Emperor’s New Cloak, were the most enjoyable for him.

However, he also noted that the series finale was particularly emotionally challenging. Darren added:
The finale was hard to do. The cast had been there forever, so it was hard for them, and it was hard for me, too, because my relationship with everyone had grown instantly. I loved that entire cast. When it was ending, it was so sad, sad for them and extremely sad for me, too. I’d sing that song (“The Way You Look Tonight”) to Nana Visitor and she’d start crying. And when she’d start crying, I’d start crying. It was tough getting through it.

Darren also mentioned that he particularly enjoyed the Vic Fontaine character because Fontaine was a singer, something Darren himself loved.
James Darren Passed Away at the Age of 88
James Darren, who played memorable roles inThe Time TunnelandT.J. Hooker, died peacefully in his sleep while getting heart-related treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on August 2. The same was confirmedby his son, Jim Moret. According to Moret, the actor was admitted to the hospital for an aortic valve replacement surgery.
But due to his age-related weakness, he was sent home, only to return to the hospital later. The actor was born in 1936 in Philadelphia and studied acting under the renowned coach Stella Adler. For this, he used to commute regularly to New York for lessons. Not only acting, but Darren had also established his mark in directing and singing.
