Game of Thronesis pretty much an epic full of revenge stories, and one of the most popular vengeance arcs in the show was known as the Cleganebowl, or the highly anticipated duel between the Clegane brothers, Gregor and Sandor.

Fans finally got their wish after eight seasons, which saw the brutal end of The Hound and The Mountain, with Sandor finally exacting his revenge on his older brother, although it didn’t go the way we all expected. Still, the plunge into their fiery deaths seemed to give their story a poetic conclusion.
Game of Thronesgave us the most awaited revenge story
Gregor and Sandor Clegane’s relationship inGame of Throneshad been known to be tumultuous since the beginning, which prompted speculation from the audience that they would soon have to go toe-to-toe and lock horns in an epic duel. In Season 8, the Cleganebowl finally happened and we have finally seen Sandor, or The Hound, face his biggest rival.
How exactly did they become enemies? It started in their childhood when Sandor played with one of Gregor’s toys. Enraged and without a warning, the latter grabbed Sandor and pushed his face into the burning coals, leaving him with a prominent scar that we’ve seen in the show.

Gregor, or The Mountain, had always been violent, and Sandor’s journey both in the books and the series demonstrated his attempt at being less brutal than his brother. Still, The Hound carried his feelings of hatred.
Game of Thrones: Without George R.R. Martin, Rory McCann Would Not Have Been Able to Turn Into The Hound
In Episode 5 of the final season, we saw The Hound come face-to-face with The Mountain in the Red Keep. Sandor had wished for a different way of killing his brother, but realizing it wouldn’t happen without sacrificing himself, he ultimately tackled Gregor and sent both of them down the burning city ground.
Although we wish for Sandor to have survived this scene, the symbolism was on point. He pushed Gregor into the pit of fire the way his older brother did to him when he was a child. For many fans, it was a full-circle moment.

Are the Clegane brothers alive inThe Winds of Winter?
George R.R. Martin’s upcoming sixth novel promises answers to questions we all have ever since the conclusion ofGame of Thrones. In the book, it is unclear if the Clegane brothers would engage in a similar confrontation, let alone if they were alive by the end ofA Dance with Dragons.
After the fight betweenThe Mountain and Oberyn Martell, the former was left in a terrible state due to poisoning from manticore venom. Cersei Lannister agreed to have Maester Qyburn experiment on him, while she announced to the small council that The Mountain was dead and his severed head would be delivered to Sunspear in restitution for the death of Elia Martell.

Sandor, on the other hand, was revealed by the Elder Brother to have died from his wounds inA Feast for Crows. Still, there is a possibility that he’s alive and residing in Quiet Isle’s monastery.
With this uncertainty regarding the whereabouts of the Clegane brothers, we don’t know if we’re getting the same revenge story inThe Winds of Winter.

Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
