Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War has been revealed to be the next free downloadable game forEpic Games Storeusers. It will be available to download from March 16-23.
Originally released back in July 2018 for PC, the title is a strategy 4X video game — a subgenre of strategy game that was popularized by the likes ofCivilization—based on the popular, long-running Warhammer franchise. The title also features a range of add-ons, although it doesn’t appear that these will be included.
The game was developed byProxy Studios, whose output of games has entirely consisted of strategy titles. At the time of publication, Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of Warhas marked Proxy’s first and only time working with a pre-existing IP, as well as being its only Warhammer title. Additionally, Slitherine Software acted as publisher, being quite prolific in the PC publishing scene since 2009.

Gladius - Relics of Warwas met with a generally average reception at launch. It appeared onour recent listof the best Warhammer 40,000 titles, with its choice of factions being a main point of praise. It’s perhaps most notable for being the first strategy 4X Warhammer title, with other strategy spin-offs in the series typically sticking to either the turn-based or real-time molds. 4X strategy games stand for Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate, and initially took inspiration from board games as well as text-based computer games.
As the title implies, the game takes place on the in-universe planet of Gladius, with players being able to play as different familiar races: Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Orks, and Necrons. Gladius isn’t a setting that’s exclusive to this game, as it also appears in the main board game.
The currentEpic Games Storetitle that is getting replaced is 2021’sCall of the Sea, the debut adventure puzzle from Spanish developer Out of the Blue. The game received a somewhat middling6.5/10 score from DualShockersand is available for download until March 16.
The latest video game adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 was 2022’s Darktide, a co-op shooter that acts as a spiritual successor to the highly popularVermintidegames, which weawarded with a respectable 7.8/10score.
