The key to progressing in the Plains is Flax. Flax pairs with Black Metal to form the basis of nearly every piece of Plains gear, so if you want to get better weapons and armor before braving the Mistlands, you’ll need to get Flax and plenty of it Keep reading to learn how to find, farm, and refine Flax.
How To Find Flax
Finding Flax is very similar to how you find Barley. Bothonly grow in Fuling Villagesscattered throughout the Plains biome. When you happen across one, look for small fields or chests since they have a chance to contain Flax.
If you’re having trouble finding your first batch of Flax, don’t worry. It’s not a guaranteed spawn, butmost Fuling Villages should have at least a few plants to take home.Just keep looking until you find some.

How To Farm Flax
Like Carrots, Turnips, Onions, andBarley, Flax can be farmed using the Cultivator and some tilled ground. You can plant Flax as long as you have some in your inventory, but, as all crops are, Flax is subject to some placement rules that you have to follow if you want the plant to grow. It can’t be placed too close to other plants or objects, it can’t be placed under a roof, andit must be planted in the Plains biome.
Once grown, you may interact with the Flax to harvest it and receive two Flax for your troubles. This meansyou’ll have to dedicate half of your harvest to resowing your fieldsif you plan on farming Flax consistently.

How To Farm Flax Efficiently
Flax is one of the more annoying crops to place efficiently. Its beginning size is significantly smaller than the size of its grown version, meaning you have to space your Flax deceptively far apart. Each plant should be a bit more than 3/4ths of an in-game unit away from each other, meaning you may only fit eight in a three-by-one space.
For simplicity and consistency’s sake, it may be better to simply plant them one in-game unit apart. The optimal distance is hard to judge with the eye, and you only get two Flax from each harvested plant, so you have less room to make mistakes than you would with Turnips or Carrots.

Refining & Using Flax
Flax itself, again much like Barley, is next to useless. It needs to be refined into a better material before it can be used in recipes. In this case, you’ll need to build the Spinning Wheel, which first and foremost requiresa nearby Artisan Table. This structure will automatically do the painstaking labor of spinning your Flax harvest into Linen Threads. Simply load the hopper of the machine, and it will start producing completed threads at a steady rate.
Linen Threads are a key part of nearly all Plains-level gear. It’s the primary ingredient in the Padded Armor, and many Black Metal weapons require Linen Threads in copious amounts. There are even a few Mistlands items that call for Linen threads.
