The anime adaptation ofUzumakiby Junji Ito took a historical downfall no other anime has seen. With a brilliant first episode that nailed the horror and eerie vibe ofUzumaki, the second episode was not exactly what fans expected to see. The first episode included fluid animation in the same art style as Junji Ito drew in his manga, with the spirals being depicted in a way that would make the viewer feel uneasy. However, the second episode was choppy and completely lost the horror aspect.

An executive producer in charge ofUzumakihas explained why this happened and it may or may not shock people to know this. The team behind the animation were basically sabotaged during the production and were left with limited options. The best one was to complete the project, despite the drop in animation quality.Uzumakiwas highly anticipated, and perhaps the pressure to churn it out faster in the toxic animation industry caused this blunder.
UzumakiWould’ve Been Perfect if Animated Consistently
Uzumakiwill only consist of four episodes in its anime adaptation. It promised to be a short horror anime that will certainly make the anime community shake in their boots. Junji Ito is a legendary horror mangaka, whose sweet personality but twisted stories have captivated the community. So whenUzumakiwas announced for an anime adaptation, fans were thrilled. The first episode was perfect, with brilliant animation and chilling voice acting. However, things fell down in the second episode and now we know why.
Uzumaki Ending Explained: The Unending Cycle of Horror Before Attack on Titan Made it Cool
The animation house was changed after the first episode by the top brass in order to cut costs on animation and the length of each episode. Fans expressed their disappointment and that they would’ve rather waited more years for a proper adaptation than a half-baked series.
An ‘UZUMAKI’ exec producer says the drop in animation quality is because they got “screwed over” during production.“The options were A) not finish it, air nothing & call it a loss, B) Just finish Ep. 1 & leave it incomplete or C) run all 4, warts & all”pic.twitter.com/VAfbAwkd9F

Honestly, I feel bad from animators in Japan. They have a horrible business culture and aren’t paid nearly what they’re worth.
can’t believe we’re never getting a good Junji Ito adaptation..
Some fans also expressed deep sympathy for the team who dedicated years toUzumakionly to face such sabotage. The animation studio switched from Fugaku to Akatsuki. The switch is evident from how the first episode had such attention to detail whereas the second episode lacked any personality. Changing studios was its biggest mistake. It’s a huge disappointment thatJunji Ito’s works never seem to get a faithful anime adaptation. If you are curious about the trueUzumaki, reading the manga is the best option.
Was Four Episodes Ever Enough forUzumaki?
Despite only having 4 episodes and having no interruptions during the pandemic, the production ofUzumakiwas still rushed and the story is, unfortunately, watered down. The second episode cut out major parts of the manga that brought out the creep factor and horror aspect ofUzumaki. It doesn’t do ample justice to the genius of Junji Ito, whose horror stories are a league of its own.
Uzumaki Anime Has Nailed the Animation But Still Carries the Curse That Real Fans of Junji Ito Will Hate
The anime adaptation seemed doomed from the start. The four-episodic length already madefans skeptical about its abilityto complete the original manga. Now,Uzumakiis facing the consequences of it and is unable to do any justice to the original.
Uzumakiis available on Adult Swim.
