Bleachfans are already head over heels for Tite Kubo’s genius. But ever sinceBleach: Thousand Year Blood Warbegan airing, the appreciation for the mangaka has gone through the roof. Of course, Studio Pierrot’s accurate adaptation of the final saga of the manga has definitely helped.

Bleachcannot be considered a dark anime generally. Its effort to belong to the Shonen genre has rendered it filled with action, suspense, and comedy, but not mind-bending qualities. Yet, one character in the series is enough to upend that notion.

One Character Who Gave a Dark Twist toBleachBecause of Her Powers

Thecharacter in questionis Giselle Gewelle, a Quincy who is a member of the Wandenreich’s Sternwitter. She debuted in Part 2 (The Separation) ofBleach: Thousand Year Blood Wararc and immediately took everyone by surprise. A huge part of it is the uncanny power she possesses.

Giselle’s primary ability is called The Zombie. Giselle can control the bodies of anyone who comes in contact with her blood and creates a corpse out of them. These corpses are ready to do whatever she orders them, including killing themselves or others. Her ability does not work on a fellow Quincy till they are dead already.

While this might seem an overpowered skill, it does have limitations. The amount of Giselle’s blood needed to control a person depends on their Reiatsu. A person with lower reiatsu can become her zombie even if a drop of her drop is splattered on them. However, to control someone with higher reiatsu, the blood has to be spread throughout the body via the heart for Giselle to take over. She has better control over those zombified before death since they have fresh cells that give them better movement and speed.

Tite Kubo’s Genius Shines in Giselle’s Twisted Personality

Giselle’s The Zombie is undoubtedly an overpowered ability; however, the cherry on top is her twisted personality. Even on battlefields and in critical situations, Giselle has an uncanny smile on her face at all times, which makesBleach darker than usual. But her smile does not undermine her cruelty in battles.

In one scene, she even urged and manipulated a bunch of Shinigamis to attack her so her blood could be splattered on them. Once she was cut and her goal was achieved, she ordered all the Shinigami to kill themselves, which they did by committing Seppuku. Despite her actions, she claims not to be a sadist.

She alsohas no qualmswith turning the bodies of her fallen comrades into weapons to protect herself. She used Bambi as a zombie after she died. But the more horrifying fact is that since she cannot zombify Quincies before their death, she had to kill Bambi herself before she could command her body. She even commented that when she remembers Bambi’s face before she killed her, it makes her excited.

TheBleachmanga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. TheBleach: Thousand Year Blood Waranime is available to watch on Hulu.
