Charles Dance gave an excellent performance as Tywin Lannister inGame of Thrones. A long-time stage actor and film veteran, he always exhibits dedication to his craft and even goes to extreme lengths to effectively portray the characters he plays on screen.

There’s a reason why he has been cast for the antagonistic role in the hit HBO show. Such a character needed someone who could embody the position of a royal patriarch that is both highly complex and domineering at the same time.

Charles Dance Was So Committed ToGame Of ThronesHe Even Learned How To Skin A Deer

The role of Tywin Lannister inGame of Thronesis not for the weak.Charles Dancewas able to translate the character’s evilness onto the screen. The head of the House Lannister is the mastermind of many gruesome crimes in the show, and it takes a lot of guts for someone to make these orders.

And speaking of guts, Dance also had a scene that required practical effects. The fantasy series usually rely on special effects, but for this grisly scene, they had to make it realistic.

The actor spoke withEsquireand revealed that he learned how to skin a deer which he did on camera. “I skinned a deer quite well actually,” he noted. The staff went to him and asked first if he was a vegetarian, and when he replied in the negative, they called a butcher to demonstrate to him how to properly skin a deer. Unfortunately, they forgot to give him a piece. “I was hoping for a nice haunch of venison from it, but they didn’t even let me keep a hoof!” the actor ranted.

He remarked in another conversation that the first deer they brought on the set was for his practice. They gave him a knife and a room to work in, and there he learned how to skin and spill the guts. The following day, they brought a new one and that was the animal seen on television. Dance said he had a great time doing so, but it took him two days to get the smell of blood off his hands.

This experience was indeed very memorable for the actor. It happened a long time ago during his scene withNikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jaime Lannister when fans can recall the latter still had two hands!

Here’s Who George R.R. Martin Wanted To Play As Tywin Lannister

On a more shocking note, authorGeorge R.R. Martinoriginally wanted another actor for the role ofTywin Lannister. He wantedThat 70’s Showstar Kurtwood Smith. While he’s a great actor, it’s difficult to imagine the Lord of Casterly Rock as someone other than Charles Dance.

With what the English actor showcased in the series and his determination to learn how to skin a stag without hesitation, Martin should be impressed with his casting.
