Game of Throneswas once the biggest show on the planet, amassing a record number of awards and viewership. However, even the biggest shows are not without their flaws, and before the final season debacle, there was a real possibility that the series would never even take flight.

The original pilot forGame of Throneswas way different from what we saw on TV. With several different actors and entirely different scenes, it was a disaster. Sean Bean, who was present during its filming playing Ned Stark, once recalled what he encountered on set during the original pilot episode.
Sean Bean talks about filming unaired original pilot forGame of Thrones
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss worked really hard to get the series on track, facing crushing defeats initially.Sean Bean, who played Ned Stark in Season 1, recalled filming theoriginal pilot episodewithEW:
I remember a scene with Bran in the old tree and [his parents are] talking to him about life. He was very young at the time, when Isaac was playing the part. There are some nice scenes with [Williams as Arya]. I quite enjoyed those scenes because there was a lot of horrible backstabbing going on, and I think those scenes stood out because they were very natural and people could identity with them: a father and his children.

I also remember the banquet, which was quite interesting. We shot it in Scotland, and it was a banquet with King Robert. All the families were coming together, there was a real feeling of this horrible tension, which represents what we did afterwards.

Playing the honorable Lord of Winterfell, Bean was only on the set for one season as he was killed off by the end of it. That gave him a different perspective on the show after his departure.
Sean Bean looks back at his last scenes as Ned Stark
Ned Stark followed the same trope Sean Bean’s characters are infamous for, getting killed on-screen.The Lord of the Ringsstar fondly recalled his last days on the set ofGame of Thrones:
I suppose it was just the general downturn day, the slide into this pit of vipers that he couldn’t really extricate himself from. He was falling in, he was trying to keep his values, his dignity. At the same time, he had no support, but he still carried on.

He stayed on for Robert as Hand of the King, and then he was on the throne himself and things got worse and worse. I remember filming that day. The death, that was wonderful because it was so unexpected. I thought it was amazing how they shot it. But I died, and then I had to do some scenes from earlier in the episode, so it wasn’t the end for me.
We were in Malta; it was very hot. It was very colorful. Everyone was there, and with things like that there’s a sort of gallows humor to it. It’s awful what’s happening, and you start giggling and laughing. When the head fell off, there were mistakes. It didn’t quite work out sometimes. It was quite comic. So it breaks the ice a bit.

Ned Stark’s death is counted among the most heart-breaking events in TV history. Some were even hoping that he might’ve survived, or brought back later on in the series. The terror, the uncertainty, the intricately woven storylines are what madeGame of Thronesthe epic fans lovingly remember.
