Yellowstonehas won millions’ of hearts over the years, blossoming into a full-blown franchise with sequels, prequels, and spin-offs that have expanded its universe in every direction. What everybody is aware of by now is that the mastermind behind it all, Taylor Sheridan, just doesn’t create the stories, but he also steps in front of the camera as a character too!

This dual role has sparked plenty of fan chatter, with many wondering if his on-screen persona is a reflection of himself. While Travis isn’t exactly what you’d call a fan-favorite, the show’s producer Christina Alexandra Voros has finally addressed all the fuss, shedding light on whether the character and the creator are one and the same.

Are Taylor Sheridan and Travis Wheatley the same person?

Travis Wheatley’s sudden transformation intoYellowstone’sknight in shining armor or perhaps in cowboy hat has left a lot of fans rolling their eyes. Once a minor character, he’s now the Dutton family’s one and only, suddenly saving their ranch after John Dutton’s passing. All of a suddenly, he’s the cool, cowboy who’s apparently “has always been” essential to the plot, and it’s rubbing viewers the wrong way.

The backlash largely comes down to this, to some, Travis feels like an unnecessary self-insert for creatorTaylor Sheridan, who plays the character, and his dominance inseason 5’s final episodesfeels a bit self-indulgent. It doesn’t help that he seems to be idolized by everyone around him, commanding respect on every step.

Of course, Sheridan’s defenders are quick to point out that the criticism comes from people who’ve probably never stepped foot on a ranch. Christina Alexandra Voros the producer behind the hit show, recently spoke toThe Wrapabout this issue stating,

And when you become an iconic personality in any realm, but certainly in a creative realm, people love to tear each other up and tear each other down. And there’s people who spend more time arguing or complaining about television shows than they do watching the shows themselves.

She further added,

There are people who are still talking about it. I thought it was a lot of fun. And I think there are elements of Travis that are elements of Taylor, and then I think there are elements that are fictional. If you’re doing the magic the right way, people aren’t going to be able to tell which is which. And I think that’s part of what works.

She argued that Travis is authentic to that world, but to the uninitiated, he just seems like an exaggerated cowboy caricature. So, love him or hate him, Travis Wheatley is definitely stirring up some strong opinions.

Is all the extra attention on Travis hinting at a potential spin-off?

So, could a Travis-led spin-off be in the works? All signs point to yes.Yellowstoneseason 5, episode 13, gave Travis his biggest role yet, dedicating nearly half the episode to him. The episode,Give the World Away, even followed up with Rip reminiscing about bar adventures with Travis, seemingly out of the blue. But what ticked off the fans, might be a hint they are completely missing!

This extra focus feels less like a natural progression and more like a a soft pitch for a potential Travis-centered spin-off. The thing about backdoor pilots is that it often spotlights the new show’s lead, even if it feels disconnected from the main storyline, which is exactly what happened here.

The problem? Timing. WithYellowstonesupposed to wrap up in season 5, using precious screen time on Travis instead of addressing major plotlines feels wrong. Especially after so much wait and drama, fans were already upset with how the show handled John Dutton’s death and now this.

So if the people find the finale lacking the punch they expect, Sheridan’s choice to prioritize a Travis pitch might share some of the blame. While a spin-off could be intriguing, this wasn’t the best moment to bring it up perhaps.

Yellowstone is streaming on Peacock.
