In the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry, the sale of artist catalogs has become a billion-dollar business. Legacy acts, from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen and even the iconic Queen, have cashed in on their life’s work for enormous sums, leading to speculation about how much iconic bands like Pink Floyd could command for their music rights. While the band held off on selling their music for years, a rumor sparked that they recently ended up making $100 million less than they had initially bargained for.

The deal cut by the iconic band with Sony left many fans scratching their heads and wondering: why would one of the most influential rock bands in history leave such a large sum on the table?
What led to Pink Floyd’s $100 million loss?
Pink Floyd might have been one of the biggest rock bands in the world. However, that hasn’t stopped them from being just a little bit controversial. According to reports fromVariety, the group recently sold its music catalog for $400 million. While it was a massive sum of money, it was rumored to be $100 million less than the band’s original asking price. Although they came rather close to signing a deal for their initial price back in 2022, that promptly fell apart due to issues and fights within the group.
Apart from the usual problems between band mates Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason, and the estates of keyboardist Richard Wright and founding singer-songwriter Roger “Syd” Barrett, the bassist made matters worse by sharing his political views. In fact, the 81-year-old had made controversial political statements against the violence between Israel and Palestine and seemed to be in favor of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.

Although Waters’ statements caused the iconic bad to incur a huge loss, it was not the first time that his political views affected Pink Floyd negatively.
How Roger Waters caused the break up of Pink Floyd
Roger Waters played a significant role in both the creation and the breakup of Pink Floyd. By the mid-1970s, the bassist had gone on to become the dominant force in shaping the band’s music and concepts, especially with albums like 1979’sThe WallandThe Final Cut.
However, according to reports from theIndependent, his takeover ended up causing a rift between him and the other band mates who felt as though their creative inputs were being overshadowed. This power imbalance set the stage for conflict within the band.

Apart from causing problems within Pink Floyd, Waters took things a tad bit further by airing his political views through their music. In fact, he had consideredThe Final Cutas unabashedly political. He even stated that it was an attack on Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands War. With the now 81-year-old struggling to keep his opinions to himself, that too added to the tension within the band.

In 1985, Waters’ chose to exit the band. He believed that with him gone, the rock band would be history. However, David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason had plans of continuing the legacy. But the former bassist sued to stop them from carrying on as Pink Floyd, leaving all involved fighting for two years. Luckily, in 1987, an out-of-court settlement gave them the right to continue using the iconic name.
