Red Barrels, the Montreal-based independent developer has presented the latest gameplay trailer for The Outlast Trials during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022. The new experience in the world of Outlast will also enter a Closed Beta playtest over Halloween weekend, from Friday, October 28th to Tuesday, November 1st, 2022.

The Outlast Trials is a 4-player co-op survival horror game set during the height of the Cold War era. Players are test subjects that are imprisoned in a secret facility, and they will be living continuous physical and mental torment from iconic characters from the series. The challenge is to survive this ordeal with your sanity intact. The game, according to the developer, will be proof of the studio’s initiative to challenge itself with every new iteration.

In a post on thePlayStation blog, the developer compares The Outlast Trials as being similar to a TV series in terms of its structure, as opposed to the previous game, which had a linear, one-way narrative like a movie. It has also been confirmed that the new entry will retain the most appealing aspects of the previous games, such as twisted realism, decadence, and gore.

The evolution does not only involve the direction but also the game engine being used, as the new game will utilize Unreal Engine 4, unlike Outlast 1 and 2 which were made in Unreal Engine 3.

To be in with a chance of joining the Closed Beta, all you have to do is click ‘request access; under the Join the Uninitialized on The Outlast Trials’ officialSteampage. The game does not have a definite release date yet, but according to the latest Gamescom 2021trailer, the studio is still keen on delivering the full experience this year.

Not much has been revealed about the game yet, but instead of actually talking about the game, the developers have been very open instead about their thinking process and the inspirations behind each component of its game; sound design, music, characters, storytelling, and the psychology of horror itself.
