Eiichiro Oda’s storytelling inOne Piecehas been extremely layered. He incorporates different cultures and references in the manga through characters and plotlines. A complex approach like that has made fans overly analytical of every event in the manga, making them overanalyze every panel to catch hints of any foreshadowing. This process usually brings out hidden details, but one panel from the Jaya Arc sparked some controversy due to its mysterious nature.

Even after almost 800 chapters later, we still don’t have a definitive explanation about that part. Till this day, that specific panel pops up in discussions as fans try to make sense of it. Some interesting theories have also come out from the entire discussion. So, until Oda confirms the true meaning behind the panel himself, here’s everything we know about it so far.
TheOne PiecePanel that Sparked a Discourse
During Jaya Arc, Luffy and Zoro met Blackbeard for the first time inOne Piece. It’s one of the coolest scenes of Luffy where he remains calm and composed despite being in an aggressive situation. When Nami generally asks who Blackbeard is, Luffy responds that it’s not just one guy. There was another translation of this panel where Luffy says Blackbeard is not ‘he’.

Zoro follows up by referring to Blackbeard as ‘they’. Using ‘they’ for Blackbeard sparked some controversy and fans were wondering what it meant. Did Zoro just assume Blackbeard’s pronouns or was there anything more to it?
One Piece: What is Blackbeard’s True Weakness? – Eiichiro Oda’s Earliest Design Has an Answer
Theofficial translationanswers these questions with a more clear explanation. In the official panel, Zoro said ‘there’s more than one… I think’. While the official translation clears the initial doubts, it sparks a new series of questions.
Here’s What Made This Panel so Controversial for Fans
Most fans have come to the conclusion that both Zoro and Luffy were probably referring to Blackbeard’s crew. This makes sense as we saw Van Augur and Doc Q a few chapters before this panel. Both characters are members of Blackbeard’s crew. Luffy and Zoro probably realized that if Blackbeard knew about Sky Island, he probably had a similar dream and a crew to achieve that dream.
“Oda likes to not usually go for the obvious answer”: Kuzan Betraying Blackbeard in One Piece is So Obvious That Fans are Convinced it’s Not Happening
This fan theory explains the entire panel without many loose ends. There was a more interesting possibility that fans came up with. Blackbeard’s flag has three skulls on it. Moreover, the way Luffy phrased his response made fans wonder if Blackbeard wasn’t just one person. Could he be more than one individual? The events that support this theory are him wielding more than one devil fruit and his pirate flag.
Both Luffy and Zoro are capable of using Conqueror’s Haki which could have been the reason why they could sense something was off about Blackbeard. Or it could be a special connection with the D that Luffy shares with Blackbeard that made him realize something. If Blackbeard is indeed more than just one individual, it would be an interesting turn off events.

The interesting possibilities that the panel hints at makes fans excited about the time whenEiichiro Odafinally reveals the truth behind this mystery. After all this mental gymnastics, if it’s revealed that Luffy was just referring to Blackbeard’s crew, it would honestly be a shame. But on the brighter side, at least we’ll have a definite answer to one more mystery inOne Piece.
