It’s easy to say that as the sequel to one of the most acclaimed video games of all time, anticipation for the upcomingThe Last of Us Part IIis at an all-time high. Though the game wasdelayed late last year from its original February release window to May 2020, fans are still hoping for an incredible successor to the story of Joel and Ellie that we saw fromThe Last of Us. That’s especially thanks to the incredible visuals that we’ve seen from the game’s trailers so far, with one fan taking the time to reimagine whatThe Last of Us Part IIwould look like if it were made on the very first PlayStation.
YouTuber Bearly Regal released a new video that reimagines (or “demakes”)The Last of Us Part IIas an original PlayStation title, with the video being made entirely from within the framework of Media Molecule’sDreams. As you can tell from the video, just about everything that Bearly Regal made in the video not only captures the themes and style ofThe Last of Us Part II, but also perfectly recreates the blocky, chunky style of PS1-era graphics and howTLOUIImight have played back then.
This of course isn’t the first time that we’ve featured the work of Bearly Regal, as just recently he made an incredible video thatadapted CD Projekt Red’s upcomingCyberpunk 2077into the world ofDreamsin the style of a PS1 game. He’s shown a knack for being able to demake games in a faithful way as if they were on the PS1, and especially with his work on the fan-madeThe Last of Us Part IIvideo, I almost want to play the demake as much as I want to play the real thing when it comes out in May.
In terms of other recent news aroundThe Last of Us Part II, things have been relatively quiet on both Naughty Dog and Sony’s end, other than the game’s delay to spring 2020. The game’s director, Neil Druckmann, expressed thatthe extra work going into the game was being done to “make fans proud”, to shed some positivity on the game’s three-month delay. It was also recently revealed that an animatedThe Last of Usshort film was in the works, withartwork from the cancelled project having surfacedfrom the animation team behind it.
The Last of Us Part IIwill release exclusively for PS4 on August 14, 2025, andyou can pre-order the game right now over on Amazon. For a closer look at Bearly Regal’s version of what the game would look like on the original PlayStation, you’re able to check out the video below:
