No sandwich is complete without a filling, and no movie is complete without its characters. The acting in a movie can make or break it at the box office and with the insistence of Director Andrés Muschietti to continue to cast Ezra Miller as the Flash despite the many controversies and legal allegations against the actor, the characters inThe Flashhave their work cut out for them.

However, they did their work quite impressively. From the charismatic delivery of Michael Keaton, proving that the old guard still has the spark, to Sasha Calle, proving that new blood is good for the franchise, here are the most entertaining characters in the Flash movies.

10Sandwich Guy

In the opening sequence of the movie, we see Barry go to Filby’s Cafe to get himself an absolute abomination of a sandwich. While the employee at the counter makes his order, Barry has to go and save some people from a collapsing building.

The sandwich guy takes his sweet time making Barry’s order, putting in his heart and love to make the perfect sandwich. He doesn’t rush at all and gets the sandwich ready exactly as Barry returns.

9Henry Allen

Barry’s father is a pivotal character in the movie. He was framed for the murder of his wife, though the evidence seems flimsy at best. Disregarding the in-universe explanation of his incarceration, he is in penitentiary prison awaiting the trial that will decide his fate.

He’s the reason why Barry was trying so hard to fix the past. Going through the murder of your mother is one thing, but losing your father as well in the process is just devastating, especially if you believe he’s innocent.

8Iris West

Cut entirely from Justice League and appearing briefly in the Snyder Cut, the Flash’s traditional love interest didn’t get much screen time in the new DCEU so far. However, she gets a more central role in the new Flash movie.

Her first meeting with Barry is about as awkward as you’d expect, but the chemistry is definitely there, though it’s mostly carried by Iris' charm. She helps Barry come up with the idea of only changing a small detail in the past to affect the present and proceeds to be ghosted by the awkward speedster.

7General Zod

The main antagonist in The Flash is General Zod, a Kryptonian supremacist bent on bringing back the glory of Krypton with Earth as his refining material. In Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, General Zod invades Earth in search of Kal-El (aka Superman), who he needs to extract the codex needed to terraform Earth. However, he is defeated by the superhero at the end of the movie.

His second appearance in this version of the DCU is in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as a genetically modified monster called Doomsday. In the alternate timeline where Flash finds himself in The Flash, General Zod has already intercepted the pod bringing Kal-El to Earth and killed the Kryptonian child in cold blood. However, he discovered that the codex was actually in the DNA of Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl) whom he goes after in the final act of the movie.

6Ben Affleck’s Batman

Ben Affleck debuted as the dark crusader in 2016 in the hit film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Though ridiculed for some of the sillier plot points, the film was a global hit and raked in about $800M at the box office, launching Ben Affleck’s Batman to fame.

The actor was planning on quitting after Justice League because of personal issues but decided to come back for the subsequent films anyways, much to the joy of fans. He only appears during the movie’s first act, but it’s great to see him nonetheless.

5Young Barry

Young Barry is quite different from the Barry Allen we’ve seen on the big screen in the current DCU timeline, but he’s also very similar. He’s outgoing, carefree, and extroverted. His personality is that of a stereotypical millennial stoner dude. But he’s still just as nerdy as the older Barry, has the same taste in movies, and has the same core values that define him.

In this movie, the younger version of Barry acts as the student of his older self. He learns the ways of being the Flash relatively quickly, learning from his alternate self’s experiences and taking in his knowledge. His role in the movie comes to a crescendo in the final act of the movie, where he fully comes into his powers and stands on equal grounds with his older version.

Fans weren’t sure if Jeremy Irons was going to return as Alfred in the Flash movie, but the English actor didn’t disappoint and continued the role in the new movie. He plays an important role at the start of the movie, directing Barry on what’s going on around him and what he needs to do to save the most people.

Unfortunately, it seems like Michael Keaton’s Alfred has passed away, so we don’t get to see the butler after the movie’s first act is over. However, for the brief moment he’s on screen, Jeremy Irons makes the cinema that much brighter.

3Michael Keaton’s Batman

Teased in multiple trailers and shown in many leaks, Michael Keaton returns and dons the Batman suit one more time. Younger viewers might not be familiar with his work last the caped crusader, but die-hard fans of the DC universe definitely can’t forget his performance in Batman and Batman Returns.

As the only superhero Barry can find and contact, Michael’s Batman plays a key role in the story. He helps the two Barrys on their mission to find Superman, though they end up with Supergirl instead. He brings a nostalgic charm to the movie that’s hard to replace, and his mature personality is a good foil to Barry’s immature outlook on life. Ben Affleck’s Batman and Flash’s friendship is a really heartwarming thing, and seeing that the relationship stays strong even in a different universe is reassuring.

2Old Barry

In Justice League, Barry is mostly there for comic relief and doesn’t get the character development he deserves, though he does save the universe in a very Flash-like manner in the Snyder Cut. This movie gives him everything he needs to mature as a person and come out of the grinder better than before.

Due to the presence of an even more immature and hyperactive version of himself, Barry takes on the role of the mature adult, realizing how annoying he can be at times. He also overcomes the trauma of the death of his mother, accepts the tragedy for what it is, and moves on instead of trying to fix it likethe Dark Flashcontinuously.

1Supergirl

While it’s disappointing that Henry Cavil hasn’t returned as Superman, with talented actresses like Sasha Calle making their name known in the Kryptonian space, it’s hard to stay mad for long. The actress gave a stunning performance as the flying superhero, portraying herself at her worst and best.

Seemingly not as powerful as Superman himself, Supergirl isn’t someone to dismiss, either. She has all the same powers as Clark Kent but has had less time to get used to being on Earth. She doesn’t have the same gear as Zod, nor does she have the experience of Clark Kent, so it’s only natural that she doesn’t win her first few altercations. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more of Sasha Calle in future installments in the DCU.
