In the film, Jyn is the daughter of Galen Erso, a research scientist whose work is used to create the Death Star. However, in earlier versions of the movie, Jyn’s backstory was planned to be almost entirely different, as revealed by a portion of the bookThe Art of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In the book, which details the movie’s production, it is stated that earlier drafts of the film included Jyn Erso’s mother as a Jedi, hiding from the Empire while raising her daughter and son. However, in the final film, Jyn is the only child and does not have connections to any Jedi.
The essence of that is the same; it’s the hero’s journey –- leaving home, finding the truth and facing the enemy, and returning [to a metaphorical] home.
Concept artist Erik Tiemens made the above statement (via/Film), explaining how Jyn’s story contrasts Luke Skywalker’s from the original film. As a result, removing Jyn’s connections to the Jedi worked in the film’s favor, allowing the makers to explore the hero’s journey, albeit through a different type of protagonist.

However, in recent times, the franchise has largely struggled because of its increased focus on the concepts of Jedi and Sith. For example, the sequel trilogy was nearly crushed under the pressure of continuing preexisting narrative threads surrounding the Jedi.
