Rogue Onestands out from the rest of the entries in theStar Warsfranchise, as it steers the story away from the conflict between the Jedi and Sith. It follows the story of Jyn Erso, a member of the Rebel Alliance, who is part of a group that steals the plans for the Death Star.

Despite its unique plot and mostly standalone nature,Rogue Onewas a critical and commercial success. However, the film nearly made one critical error that would have almost certainly ruined its impact on the audience and legacy. Here is howRogue Onenarrowly avoided making a Death Star-sized blunder that has plagued the franchise.

Rogue OneOriginally Planned to Reveal Jyn Erso as the Daughter of a Jedi

Rogue One:A Star Wars Storyis widely considered asone of the bestStar Warsfilms sinceThe Empire Strikes Back. Directed byGareth Edwards, the film stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, who helps a group of Rebels steal the plans of the mass-destruction weapon Death Star.

In the film, Jyn is the daughter of Galen Erso, a research scientist whose work is used to create the Death Star. However, in earlier versions of the movie, Jyn’s backstory was planned to be almost entirely different, as revealed by a portion of the bookThe Art of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In the book, which details the movie’s production, it is stated that earlier drafts of the film included Jyn Erso’s mother as a Jedi, hiding from the Empire while raising her daughter and son. However, in the final film, Jyn is the only child and does not have connections to any Jedi.

The essence of that is the same; it’s the hero’s journey –- leaving home, finding the truth and facing the enemy, and returning [to a metaphorical] home.

Concept artist Erik Tiemens made the above statement (via/Film), explaining how Jyn’s story contrasts Luke Skywalker’s from the original film. As a result, removing Jyn’s connections to the Jedi worked in the film’s favor, allowing the makers to explore the hero’s journey, albeit through a different type of protagonist.

Rogue OneWould Have Made the Same Blunder That Continues to PlagueStar Wars

For the majority of its tenure, the biggest drawing factor for the epic space opera franchise created byGeorge Lucashas been the mystical peacekeeping warriors known as Jedi. Moreover, their natural enemies, the Sith, provide interesting villains, keeping viewers involved in the narrative.

However, in recent times, the franchise has largely struggled because of its increased focus on the concepts of Jedi and Sith. For example, the sequel trilogy was nearly crushed under the pressure of continuing preexisting narrative threads surrounding the Jedi. Similarly,The Acolytehas also beencriticized for its depiction of the Jedi.

By removing Jyn’s familial connections to the Jedi,Rogue Onenarrowly avoided one major mistake that has plaguedStar Wars forsome time. If the film had depicted Jyn as the daughter of a Jedi, the fan focus would have immediately shifted to her mother, stealing the spotlight from her story. Hence, removing the connection was ultimately in the film’s best interest.
