Eric Kripke’sSupernaturalis one of the shows you just cannot get tired of. I mean, it went on for well over a decade yet the fanbase remained as strong as ever. We loved dividing ourselves into Sam or Dean’s teams with, of course, the occasional appreciation of our favorite angel, Castiel. There was just so much happening in the show that it was difficult to lose interest.

So used to fighting the world of the unseen together, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki’s Dean and Sam Winchester might never have guessed that one day they would be pitted against each other. However, the show’s creator knew from the start that this was where the show would take the brothers eventually.

Sam vs. Dean Was Always Going to Happen inSupernatural

One of the most heartbreaking storylines fromSupernaturalis whenJared Padalecki’s Sam andJensen Ackles’ Dean learn that they are destined to be the vessels of Lucifer and Michael respectively.

Season 5 pitted the two brothers who would die for each other against one another and despite the fact that it has been more than a decade since this aired, the wounds of this storyline are still quite fresh.

Luckily, despite being the destined vessel for Michael, Dean does not give the angel his consent to possess his body. While the dreaded Sam vs. Dean storyline was avoided at the last minute, it sure had us sweating all through the season.

As perEric Kripke, he always knew that the show would one day come down to“evil Sam versus good Dean.”He revealed that this storyline had been in the mix ever since the pilot episode of the show. But little did Kripke know that what he had envisioned as a five-year plan would go on to last for another decade.

In an interview withVarietyfor the show’s Oral History, Kripke said,

“Are you really sure it can’t go on?”: Eric Kripke’s 1 Call Saved ‘The Boys’ from Being Exploited Like Jensen Ackles’ ‘Supernatural’

I will say I knew that the show was going to come down to evil Sam versus good Dean and the fate of the world was going to hang in the balance — that was baked into the pilot. I wanted to build it to something that felt conclusive because I didn’t want these mysteries and mythologies to stretch on forever.

While Sam vs. Dean did happen in the middle ofSupernatural, that is not how the show ended and we actually got to see the Winchester brothers fighting God himself in the end.

Kripke left the show after five seasons and Sera Gamble was brought in to replace him.Supernaturalsaw a change in the showrunners a couple more times before finally settling for Robert Singer who overlooked seasons twelve to fifteen.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki on Season 5

Season five is a fan favorite, there’s no denying that. Both the stakes and emotions were at an all-time high and fans were caught in a dilemma of whether to hate Lucifer or have empathy for him.

While in conversation with Variety, Padalecki stated that the show had sort of humanized the devil himself, who thinks he is doing the right thing. The actor stated that by playing the character, he was able to understand where Lucifer was coming from.

He said of Lucifer’s arc in season 5,

It was a really neat story, and Lucifer…I don’t want to say we humanized him, but we sort of humanized him. Lucifer, as a character, thinks he’s doing the right thing. And as an actor all my job is, is to figure out what the character thinks he feels and why they are doing what they are doing, and ultimately Lucifer thought he was making heaven and or hell a better place by trying to rid the world of humanity.

Ackles chimed in with heaps of praise for the fifth season calling it the“grand finale”of the show. The actor stated that when he looked back on season 5, it was difficult for him to comprehend how they could possibly move on from such a brilliant story and he could totally see why Kripke walked away fromSupernaturalafter that.

To look at the five seasons, to step back and look at that all as one story… it was a massively grand finale and it was like Game Seven of the World Series, and I just don’t know how you can go on from that. I think Eric thought the same thing. He was like, ‘I’m throwing out my last pitch and I’m taking off into the sunset,’ and that’s what he did, but it had become such a hit that the studio and the network were like, ‘no, guys, you have to keep going.’

After season 5,Supernaturalsure had its ups and downs but dare we say that it was one of the most captivating shows of all time. Apart from the obvious supernatural stuff, the show has always been about family and bonds. Those who stuck around till the last season know that you just can’t turn your back on family.
