Usher Harbors Mixed Feelings About P. Diddy
In his early teens,Usherwas sent away to live withP. Diddyat his New York home in the ’90s. For a year, the young artist was molded and mentored by the Bad Boy CEO into a musician and a businessman. Despite an age difference of merely 9 years, the knowledge that Diddy had to disperse unto Usher was complex and often confusing.
Remembering his life with P. Diddy in New York – an experience that the now disgraced rapper liked to call “Puffy Flavor Camp” – Usher toldHoward Sternin an interview,“I’d never experienced anything like that. I remember flying all over the place. We’d go to Los Angeles, we’d go to Miami.”But beyond all the trips and the travels, there were experiences that even the young Usher knew were well beyond his maturity.
In the ’90s, do you understand what that’s like? It was curious. I got a chance to see some things. I went there to see the lifestyle. And I saw it. But I don’t know if I could indulge in or understand what I was even looking at. It was pretty wild. It was crazy… There were very curious things taking place, and I didn’t necessarily understand it.

He later added that his parents were never aware of the situation he was in while living with Diddy, only that he was“having a good time.”But not all of his experiences were shaded in grey. Usher Credits Diddy for a Crucial Aspect of His Life
Not every mentor can be the epitome of virtue and integrity. However, Diddy was a somewhat valuable part of Usher’s life when it came to teaching business skills and what it takes to survive in the cutthroat world dominated by new artists and overflowing talent at every turn.
Speaking toClub Shay Shayin an interview, Usher invoked praises for his former mentor, saying:
That man helped me understand life. He helped me understand what it was to be an artist, he helped me understand what it was to be passionate about something. He helped me understand culture. He helped me understand business at a different level, because I’m seeing him go from his independence to then becoming Puff Daddy. And I got a front-row seat looking at that. Thank God that I had that experience.
Usher Won’t Pass on Diddy’s Advice While Mentoring Justin Bieber as It’s All “S*x, drugs and alcohol”
However, at the same time, Usher knew what he had witnessed during his time living with Puff Daddy. And according to his own accounts, it isn’t an experience he would agree to his child having. Years later, when he took a fledgling Justin Bieber under his wing, Usher made sure to keep certain parts of his education from the time he lived with Diddy out of his mentoring.
