Tobey Maguire is celebrated as being perhaps the best iteration of Spider-Man today, but that was not always the case, at least when it came to critics. While some might say that the love that the actor is getting is thanks to nostalgia-tinted glasses, the man’s performance as Peter Parker shattered expectations in its heyday and also shut down critics who believed Maguire was not up to the role.
Maguire himself came out to talk about the criticisms that were leveled at him at the time, which focused on the fact that he did not seem like a conventional hero. Then again, Peter Parker was not a conventional hero, and therefore merited someone like Tobey Maguire being cast in the role for the big screen.

Maguire believed that those who were saying that he was an unconventional choice for Spider-Man were perhaps missingthe point of Peter Parker after all. He said: (via Cinema.com)
I know that some people think I’m not exciting enough or volatile enough for this kind of role, but I think that kind of criticism is absolutely off-base. Peter Parker is not a typical action hero. He’s probably the most down-to-earth, most carefully drawn, and least plastic of comic book figures. For me, it’s a role that I knew that I could pull off without disappointing people. And once people see the movie, I think they’ll come to the same conclusion.
Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker was perhaps one of the best depictions of the character, and the man made an amazing Spider-Man too. His return inSpider-Man: No Way Homewas met with some great enthusiasm from fans, who wish to see the character return once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This will allow the MCU to move into its next saga without becoming a cameo fest, which is something fans are bound to get weary of if done too often.
