While leading industry figures like Quentin Tarantino expressed that they have no obligation to what a person does after watching his work, Jon Bernthal on the flipside acknowledged this debate surrounding the desensitization of violence.
Given the violent tendencies of his Marvel counterpart, who is set to step his footing into the MCU, back in 2017, Bernthal shared this concern ahead ofThe Punisher‘s premiere following the tragic shootings.

Back in 2017,The Punisherwas moved back from its original release date in the wake of the mass shootings in Las Vegas and Texas, as the crux ofJon Bernthal‘s Marvel counterpart was his violent tendencies.

Speaking of the tragedy, the actor, who later flipped out on alt-right viewers, who usedThe Punishericonography at the Charlottesville rally, adding (viaEsquire)“F-ck them”, shared his concern with the desensitization of violence (viaIndieWire).
There is no question that I am concerned with the desensitization of violence. That is something that we should talk about, and we should address.
He further urged others to open up to the other side of this instead of being“completely steadfast in their political position”. As forThe Punisher, he added that it included all sides of the debate. Even though he doesn’t feel that art has to answer all of the questions, Bernthal hoped that the show would highlight the unbelievable issue by holding a mirror to society.
Jon Bernthal doesn’t believe in heroes and villains
Past Frank’s violent tendencies, which boiled down to his traumatic past, Bernthal expressed that his goal was to display Frank’s“pain and his anguish and cost of violence”. Moreover, he didn’t want to interpret him as an outright hero or villain, stressing,“It’s not interesting to me”.
I don’t believe in heroes, or villains, I just don’t. It’s not interesting to me, and it’s not real to me. I never wanted to lionize Frank Castle. What I wanted to show with him, more than anything, was his pain and his anguish and cost of violence, and the toll that it has taken on him.
With the actor now set to mark his return as the character after six years, fans are reasonably enticed about Bernthal’s Frank Castle, and according to him, the MCU show willexceed its Netflix counterparts.
