Unfortunately, the director did not return to direct the second installment due to scheduling conflicts, and it’s even sadder that we never got to see Williams pilot a Jaeger.

The firstPacific Rimmovie was released in 2013, boasting a premise of a world where people had built giant war mechas called Jaegers to fight monsters called Kaiju. Two pilots are required to maneuver a Jaeger, and they undergo a sequence called drifting to establish their compatibility.

On hisTwitteraccount, the filmmaker announced that he met withGame of ThronesactressMaisie Williamsand expressed his interest in casting her as a Jaeger pilot. This would have been great news for fans as the English actress is widely recognized for her role as the brave Arya Stark, so it’s definitely aligned with her abilities and talent.

Unfortunately, del Toro dropped from the project as he couldn’t juggle two films anymore, having agreed to helmThe Shape of Water. In his interview withCollider, he revealed there was also a case of missing the deadline for deposit, and it caused a domino effect.
The director did not reveal if they had written a role for Williams in the sequel’s draft, but he revealed that the final script was very different from the first one they prepared. There was a role of a young female pilot named Amara Namani, which went toCailee Spaeny, but we cannot speculate that this was the part del Toro wanted for Williams since the script was revised.
Pacific Rim Uprisingunderperformed at the box office with only$290 millionworldwide gross against a budget of $150 million. It was also critically panned for lacking the assets that made the original movie fun and thrilling to watch.
Charlie Hunnam would return forPacific Rim 3on one condition
Del Toro’s last update on the possibility ofPacific Rim 3was in 2021 when he revealed he has no plans to return. Meanwhile, actorCharlie Hunnam, who played Raleigh Becket, said he’s willing to reprise his role under one condition: “If Guillermo invites me to do ‘Pacific Rim 3,’ I’ll be there, or anything else he wants me to do,” he toldInverse.

Perhaps, if the filmmaker changes his mind, we can see Hunnam again in a prequel story, and of course, Williams could finally join in just as how del Toro originally wanted!
