When one is a creator, inspiration can strike from anywhere. When one is as talented as Steven Spielberg, this becomes even more true. The director has created films from almost every genre, all varying in style, matter of storytelling, and direction. It is safe to say that the diversity in his filmmaking style makes it very difficult to find inspiration in the same place over and over.

While most of the time, it can strike on the pages of a book or a conversation with someone about their life experiences, often, it can be isolation or a troublesome situation that can force the mind to work overtime. During an interview, Spielberg revealed how he ended up getting the idea for his 2022 film,The Fabelmans, and the story is quite interesting.
Steven Spielberg’s Worst Houseful Show
During an interview withThe New Yorker,Steven Spielbergtalked about how he ended up getting the idea of making an autobiographical film such asThe Fabelmans. Considering how personal the film gets at times and how few fictional elements have been added, it is safe to say that audiences were curious about how he got the idea to get so vulnerable in his own project.
The director confessed that it all began when the pandemic started, and all his children were forced to come back to his place and reside in their childhood home with their parents. The house was completely full, and the director got to interact with his children over and over throughout the day.

Steven Spielberg Didn’t Realize His Parents Had Unintentionally Inspired His First Sci-fi Movie Until 22 Years After Its Release
When the pandemic first hit, some of my kids flew in from the East Coast, and they all took up residence in their old bedrooms and Kate [Capshaw, his wife] and I got a lot of our family back. It was very disconcerting not to go into work. Directing is a social occupation, and I’m very used to interacting with people every single day. I was not really acclimating to the Zoom world very well.
While such a situation would be most parents’ dream come true, the same was not the case for the director. Not being used to so much human interaction in the span of one day seemed to be seriously taking a toll on him. Additionally, while the entire world had adjusted to their lives online and begun their work there, Spielberg seemed to be struggling with this, only adding to his frustration.

Steven Spielberg’s Drive to Great Ideas
In such a stressful time, Steven Spielberg found driving around in his car to be his safe haven. Having this time to himself seemed to be something that he seriously cherished, being able to be on his own and forget about the worries of the world for some time. The amount of free time he had only made him enjoy this sanctuary more frequently.
I had a lot of time on my hands. I used to get in my car and drive for hours — all around Los Angeles, up Pacific Coast Highway, over to Calabasas, over near Twentynine Palms. And that gave me more time to think about what was happening in the world.

However, this also gave him an opportunity to think about things of varying genres. Among these seemed to grow the idea for his next film, as the director put forth a new task for himself. Spielberg revealed that he started to think of a story that he desperately wanted to tell and would be upset if he was unable to.
I started thinking, what’s the one story I haven’t told that I’d be really mad at myself if I don’t? It was always the same answer every time: the story of my formative years growing up between 7 and 18.

Steven Spielberg Hid Key Details about His Life in E.T. and Close Encounters
Although he tried to think of multiple answers, he always seemed to find himself at the same destination; a story centered around his younger years when he was starting out with his passion for filmmaking. Thinking that this road could lead somewhere, he decided to follow it to the end and ended up creatingThe Fabelmansinstead.
The Fabelmansis available for streaming on AppleTV.
