Stellar Bladeis heading to PC, and developer Shift Up has high expectations for its success. The game came out on PlayStation 5 last year and was one of the biggest unexpected hits of last year and was even nominated for two awards at The Game Awards 2024.

The PS5 exclusive has already proven to be a financial win, generating $43 million in royalties in 2024. With the PC market being significantly larger, the studio believes the new version will outperform the console release. But the developers need to remember this one crucial point.
Modding is going to be crazy inStellar Blade
We recently saw Shift Up’s earnings report that showed record-breaking revenue for the studio, largely driven byStellar Blade’s sales. Despite launching as a PS5 exclusive, the game quickly crossed the million-sold mark and is still generating revenue through updates and collaborations. The studio is now focusing on bringing it to PC, stating that it expects it to outsell the console release.

While Sony’sfirst-party exclusives have had a rocky historywhen making the switch to PC, the developers have been studying past failures so thatStellar Blade’s port doesn’t suffer the same fate. Games likeHorizon Zero DawnandThe Last of Us Part 1launched on PC with technical issues.

Another aspect of the studio’s strategy is to make sure the game runs smoothly, even on handheld devices like the Steam Deck. Alongside technical improvements, the PC release will feature additional content, though it is unclear whether any of it will be exclusive. Another big selling point of the PC will of course be modding. Mod support hasn’t been announced yet.
For many PC players, modding is a big aspect of gaming. TheStellar Bladecommunity is no different. Over on the subreddit for the game, players are already talking about potential mods. So while some players are eager to replay the game at higher resolutions and frame rates, a significant portion of the audience is looking forward to customizing their experience through mods.

The studio is very confident of the PC release
Financially, Shift Up is in a strong position heading into the PC release. The company reported $151.4 million in revenue for 2024, marking a 30.4% increase from the previous year.Stellar Bladeplayed a key role in this success, bringing in $43 million in royalties.

So ultimately,Stellar Bladehad a successful PlayStation 5 launch. But to get the same level of success on PC, the studio needs to deliver more than just a standard port. Luckily for Shift Up,the Asian market has grownsince last year because ofBlack Myth: Wukong‘s massive success, and there’s room for more.
The expectations for the upcoming PC release are high from players and the studio. There’s a real possibility that it could outperform the PlayStation 5 version. The studio’s careful approach to optimization and additional content is a step in the right direction. Still, the game also needs mod support as discussed to not miss out on a portion of the PC audience.
