Star Wars Outlaws' Season Pass Is Already Causing Controversy
The Ultimate Edition’s hefty price tag and unnecessary season pass have rattled fans.
Kay Vess Needs To Earn Some XP Before Reaching Han Solo’s Level
In aninterviewwith Entertainment Weekly, creative director, Julian Gerighty, discussed Outlaws’ droids, the various cities on offer to explore within a galaxy far, far away, and shone a spotlight on the new protagonist, Vess.
Keeping Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the sequel movie trilogy in mind, it’s understandable why the Outlaws team viewed creating an original lead as challenging. During the brainstorming process, Gerighty gave a tip of the hat to the “great scoundrels of cinema”, including Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Harrison Ford’s own Indiana Jones portrayal alongside his Star Wars smuggler, Han Solo.

To make Outlaws’ brand-new lead “really shine and stand out from these previous examples”, Gerighty wanted to make Vess “incredibly relatable in the sense that she isn’t a fully developed scoundrel.” Circling back to Ford’s Millenium Falcon captain, Gerighty explained Vess “doesn’t have the confidence or the cool of a Han Solo, she’s learning the ropes. She’s faking it until she makes it. So it doesn’t come from a place of 100 percent confidence. It comes from a place of taking the risk.”
It was also noted that Vess’ inexperienced approach to heists and shady business gives Outlaws its comedic backbone, and Gerighty confirmed the game “isn’t a dark piece in the galaxy of Star Wars", but instead “reminiscent of the original movies — Indiana Jones, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, all of the inspirations for Star Wars, as well."

Furthermore, Vess’ motion capture performer and voice actor, Humberly González, cited Solo as a source of inspiration for the outlaw, and touched upon a scene from the game trailer when Vess spots Solo’s carbonite within Jabba the Hutt’s palace, saying “It’s seeing a mirror of herself and someone that she would have looked up to as inspiration. It’s almost like destiny. It’s like him passing the baton; you get to be this hero now and find peace, find your way in this world, in this war that she wants nothing to do with. She just wants to be free.”
Star Wars Outlaws is scheduled to be released on August 01, 2025.
