Square Enixofficially revealed a new “NFT Collectible Art project” known as Symbiogenesis. As brand-new entertainment content from the Japanese publisher, Symbiogenesis is a Web3 NFT-based experience with a story to tell and a wide variety of characters that can be owned digitally.

As spotted byVGC, the first teaser for Symbiogenesis officially went live during a Web3 event, which was then shared on the title’s own Twitter account. The teaser doesn’t reveal anything more than the official logo for Symbiogenesis, but Square Enix’spress releasefor this announcement shares more details.

Symbiogenesis will have a dedicated community as well as an interactive story that takes place in an alternative world. Each player that owns a character in the game “can untangle a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources.” Depending on the strategic decisions that players make, more of the story unfolds for everyone.

Square Enix plans to start selling Symbiogenesis NFTs in Spring 2023. The company will also launch a free browser service at the same time, which will probably serve as the main hub for this new form of entertainment. None of the NFTs or characters have been revealed so far, but we will probably get more detail on the project next year.

Web3 is a new category of cryptocurrency that actually tries to play a role in people’s everyday life by involving them in a wide variety of activities. StepN, for example, is one of the moderately successful Web3 projects where you can own digital sneakers and then go out for a walk with them to earn cryptocurrency. However, it remains unknown how Symbiogenesis is supposed to act in this environment, and how people will get involved in the in-game tasks.

Previously, when Square Enix trademarked Symbiogenesis, it was assumed by fans that it would be a new game coming to PlayStation 5. Even some fans believed that it could be the revival of Parasite Eve, but today’s announcement was probably a disappointment for them.

Although this seems to be Square Enix’s biggest NFT-based project so far, the company has introduced different NFT arts for its well-known characters from the Final Fantasy franchise earlier.
