Since its launch, it has been extremely difficult to get your hands on a PlayStation 5 console. There was a myriad of reasons for the stock shortage, ranging from supply chain issues due to the pandemic to the never-ending chip shortage. Almost after two years after its launch, the PlayStation 5 is now readily available at major retailers, and quite a lot of fans managed to procure a unit. There was a recent price hike in some regions as well, due to the “global economic environment”, with the console costing about $50 more than its initial price. While many must be expecting a Pro variant of the PlayStation 5, Sony seems to have some other plans in mind right now.
In an exclusive report onInsider Gaming, reliable industry insider Tom Henderson states that sources close to Sony have revealed that a new chassis D is in the works which will replace the existing variants. While ideally, these changes do not cause any significant changes on the consumer end, it is not the case with this one. The new chassis will feature a detachable disk drive while being completely similar to its siblings in other respects. Essentially, this could be visualized as the PS5 Digital edition with an option to attach an external drive. While you may still attach an external disk drive to the PS5 Digital Edition, it doesn’t read it so it’s practically useless.
Sony is trying to make this idea work out without affecting the aesthetics of the consoles, something which is always an issue with detachable drives. This could be a really good buy for users who are not sure whether they want to use physical disks or not, since it gives them the option to add it later down the line. Not to forget, if the disc drive ever stops working, you will have a much easier time finding a fix or just replacing it. It remains to be seen when Sony releases this console and how it is able to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the console.
