PlayStation’s first generation VR headset was released back in 2016, and although originally released for the PlayStation 4, the hardware is forward compatible with Sony’s next-gen console, the PlayStation 5. However, a new generation of VR was confirmed earlier this year, with the successor being known as the PlayStation VR2.

In PlayStation’s original announcement post, Senior Vice President, Hideaki Nishino said that the next-generation VR system will be coming to the PlayStation 5 and will “enable the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity”. An exact release date was not shared at the time, but it has now been confirmed to be launching in early 2023.

Sony also confirmed earlier this year that they would have over 20 major first-party and third-party titles available for the PlayStation VR2 when it launches next year. Although many of these titles are yet to be confirmed, Horizon: Call of the Mountain is expected to be one of the games available.

As for the exact date that the headset will launch, this is still somewhat of a mystery. Sony may have confirmed a release window of early 2023, but this could be anywhere between January and March, assuming that they intended to launch in the first quarter of the year. Industry analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo (viaVGC) believe that the PlayStation VR2 will enter mass production later this year, with release ready for Q1 of 2023, which would be anywhere between January and March.

Last month, Sony shared an early look at the user experience included in their VR2 headset via a newblog post. The post broke down new features such as ‘See-Through View’, ‘Customized Play Area’, and the ability to broadcast yourself whilst playing. Details on the VR and Cinematic Mode were also shared, which allows players to enjoy VR game content in a 360 view in a virtual environment.
