Sonic the Hedgehog Film Franchise Brings The Golden Rings To SEGA
The announcement was made by SEGA President and COO, Representative Director Shuji Utsumi, that the Sonic the Hedgehog film series has now grossed over $1 billion ((¥157B) in the global box office.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog film was released in February 2020, with the second aptly titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2, debuting in theaters in April 2022. The two films have earned $725.2 million globally and generated $181 in consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and purchases.
In December of last year, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in theaters in the US and managed to snag an “A” CinemaScore rating and a franchise-best Certified Fresh 88% score onRotten Tomatoes.
If you haven’t seen Sonic 3 yet, the premise reads, “Sonic and his friends head to Tokyo, where they encounter Shadow, a mysterious new foe whose powers push the series' speed and scope to the next level.”

This number is even more impressive because Sonic the Hedgehog 3 isn’t even out in some parts of Asia yet. The revenue should spike fairly once those open up and the numbers are tallied.
As part of the press release, SEGA also announced that the spin-off series Knuckles available on Paramount+ has already earned a total viewing time of over 11 million hours globally in its first 28 days of streaming, which makes it the #1 Kids & Family series ever in terms of hours according to SEGA.
It’s not just in movies that the Sonic brand hits all the right notes, as the latest Sonic game released – Sonic X Shadow Generations – has been reviewed quite well since its release in October 2024. Over on Open Critic,the game is sitting at a “Strong” rating, with 85% of critics recommending it.
While there’s no synopsis or release date yet,SEGA has confirmedthat a fourth film in the series is planned for release in 2027.
