The reaction of co-creator John Tobias, who played a major role in bringing theMortal Kombatbrand to where it is today, to a fan art produced by artificial intelligence is still palpable even in 2024. This sentiment is especially relevant in the current period, as artificial intelligence has developed and become incredibly powerful

A new era in AI began with OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT in 2022. Today, there are many tools that can generate images, sounds, and videos, which naturally pose a potential threat to many industries. So, is this technology beneficial for the gaming world, or does it still need further development?
Mortal Kombat Co-Creator John Tobias’ Reaction to AI Generated Fan Art Still Applies
In 2022, a designer used AI tools to generateMortal Kombat‘s popular character,Scorpion, and shared the results on social media. Using the inputs ‘Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion, intricate fire and desert details,’ the designer stated that this technology will create many opportunities for video game concept artists
Ed Boon Offers Four Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighters in Khaos Reigns, and Of Course the Poll has the Most Predictable Winner (We Want Blanche!)
While many users liked the AI-generatedScorpion, most expressed dislike, calling it a disgrace to theMortal Kombatfranchise. Although the post caught John Tobias’s attention, he didn’t like it at all. Tobias responded to the post with the phrase ‘I’m sorry but…’ and Jim Carrey’s famous gagging GIF, receiving a lot of support from other fans.

Scorpion images that the designer had generated by AI were not at all true to the character. Besides, things like his costume and mouth mask were completely off the mark. Moreover, it essentially resembled a hybrid between a human and a bee, making it entirely unrelated to the iconic yellow-clad ninja.
However, some people find the idea of the creative process behind a game or concept art being done by AI truly disgusting. They also expressed concern about those who believe that everything technology can do is inherently good.

Can Artificial Intelligence Be Useful for the Gaming Industry in 2024?
Artificial intelligence has become much more advanced in the past years. At first, there was only ChatGPT, but now there are many AI tools like Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok from X.
Ed Boon Won’t Appreciate the Notion That Mortal Kombat 1 is the End of a Worrying Slide into Mediocrity for 1 Feature
No matter how advanced these tools become, they still lack the capability to be used in professional work. For example, Gemini’s ability to generate human images was halted in February due to controversial outputs related to historical and racial issues. Although it was recently announced that this feature will be reinstated, its effectiveness remains a question mark.
Therefore, it is still too early for AI to be used in the gaming industry. As the co-creator John Tobias said, it’s sickening. No matter how advanced AI becomes, it will never be as comprehensive or successful as a picture drawn by a skilled designer who spent days working on it.
