Ben Stiller, its executive producer and director, shed light on the similarities between the show and the current state of the entertainment industry. Let’s dive deeper into what Stiller said and what’s to be expected from the upcoming second season.

Is Hollywood’s work culture the same as Lumon Industries’?

The first season ofSeveranceshowed an eerie portrayal of corporate life that shocked audiences because of how similar it felt to modern corporate life. The bifurcation of innie and outie outlining dehumanization of modern labor, a theme that resonates even more deeply in Hollywood’s current situation.

In a recent interview with theNew York Times,Ben Stillerspoke about the unsettling similarities between the fictional world of Lumon and the real-world entertainment industry. He said,

At a certain point there’s always somebody making a decision who is not making it to your face or you don’t even know who that person is. Why a decision is made is never explained to the creative person or, if it is, it’s usually not the truth. It’s a cliché in Hollywood, but it’s kind of true that everybody will say yes and it doesn’t mean yes. It means no or let me think about it — more than ever, honestly.

This lack of clarity can be seen very clearly in the work lives ofSeverance’s protagonist Mark, played byAdam Scott, and his colleagues. Their truths start to unravel with the arrival of the rebellious Helly, played by Britt Lower.

What can be expected from Season 2?

Season 2 ofSeveranceadded some big names–Gwendoline Christie, Bob Balaban, Merritt Wever, and Alia Shawkat. The new characters, portrayed by an impressive cast, are expected to build on the chaos caused by the innies getting out at the end of season 1.

In his interview with the New York Times, Ben Stiller mentioned,

It’s a very tough environment now to get things made. The strike, post-Covid — it’s more expensive to make things, and I think the decision makers are trying to keep their jobs and trying to figure out how to make things work for them, which means constriction and choices that are safer.

He may have been hinting at the problems he is currently facing in the show which would also account forthe challenges he faced due to which the second season was delayed. The tension between creative freedom and corporate mandates has been an issue in every industry but more so in the entertainment industry.
