DirectorTodd Phillipsonce said in his interview withVarietythat they came up with the idea of adding musical elements toJoker 2in hopes of doing “something dangerous”. The original film was a massive blockbuster and he admitted to asking questions like, “How can we top ourselves?” since the 2019 film was an immense success.

In an interview withIndieWire, French auteur Jacques Audiard revealed the real deal behind makingEmilia Péreza musical movie. “The operatic way of thinking led to a certain stylization which is still in the DNA of the project,” he said. The movie, now an Oscar contender, reveals a social tragedy, and he says the musical comedy style helps convey this message.
