HBO’s adaptation ofNaughty Dog’s renowned post-apocalyptic video game,The Last of Us, was hugely successful when it aired last year. But did you know thatSpider-Mandirector Sam Raimi was originally in talks to adapt the hit game into a movie?
In fact, Raimi wasn’t just in talks to take on the job, he actually had a script for the movie ready to go. With American film production company Screen Gems (a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment) set to develop the movie and The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann on board with the project, it was looking highly likely that we were going to live in a world where The Last of Us would be adapted into a movie, as opposed to the television show we all know and love today.

The Last Of Us 2 Fans Mock Pedro Pascal’s Short Filming Stint On Season 2
Poor Pedro Pascal is the butt of everyone’s jokes due to his reportedly short stint in The Last of Us Season 2.
However, this project was all the way back in 2014 and eventually fell through before production began. In aninterview with The New Yorkerback in 2022, Druckmann said that while he respected director Sam Raimi, the movie was scrapped due to creative differences with executives. Druckmann said that they were constantly asking for things to be “bigger” and “sexier.”

As many The Last of Us fans will know, the game is not akin to that of a big, sexy Hollywood blockbuster. It has a dark story with incredibly complex characters, which requires more than just a 2-hour blockbuster movie to tell it.
HBO’s television adaptation received extremely high praise from critics and fans, with an overall rating of8.7 out of 10 on IMDB. However, while Season 2 is currently being filmed, a horror producer has come out to reveal that Sam Raimi’s script for the now-canned movie was actually “very good.”

Sam Raimi’s The Last Of Us Script Was “Very Good”
Over on X(formerly Twitter), Jose Canas, a producer for Sam Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures, has revealed that they had read the script for what would have been Raimi’s adaptation of The Last of Us and it was “very good.” The Evil Dead Rise producer didn’t reveal much more about the script, but it’s the first time an insider has discussed Raimi’s script for the project.
For some fans, this was the first they were even hearing of the cancelled project. “I didn’t even know this was a thing, especially with Sam fkin Raimi, with the show being so good I would love to see how this would have been,“X user X-23 Enthusiast said.
But not everyone was so eager for Raimi’s adaptation. Over on Reddit, user NotTaken-username saidthat the project would have “probably flopped.” They went on to say, “Raimi is a good director but his style doesn’t match tonally with the games. He’s too campy while the games are gritty.”
Unfortunately, we’ll likely never know what Raimi’s version of The Last of Us could have been, but if Jose is to be believed, it was a good one.
