Rockstar’s core publisher, Take-Two Interactive, has addressedin a recent reportthat Rockstar is easily one of their greatest assets, with franchises such as Grand Theft Auto andRed Dead Redemptionleading them to overwhelming success.
As the report reveals the staggering sales figures for the franchise and GTA 5, it also prompts us to wonder what this means for the franchise’s future, particularly with theupcoming release of GTA 6.
GTA 5’s Lifetime Sales Records
The GTA Franchise has sold about 455 million units, with GTA V making up a shocking 215 million of those sold,meaning just under 50% of all sales of a Grand Theft Auto game have been for the most recently released title.
So, although the financial report by Take-Two attempts to shine a light on Rockstar’s “diverse portfolio” with games likeMax PayneandLA Noire, when it comes down to it, GTA and, to a lesser extent, Red Dead Redemption, are the real qualities that make Rockstar a true asset for Take-Two.
However, this raises the question of whether GTA 6, their upcoming title, can achieve these sales numbers; ultimately,its success will depend not only on a triumphant release but also on continued support for GTA 6 as a platform.
GTA 6’s Successful Future Is Already Being Planned
Although GTA 5 was one of the most massive AAA releases to date, its initial release over a decade ago in 2013 on consoles like the Xbox 360, along with later hardware like the PS4 a year later, isn’t the sole reason for its longstanding success.
Aspects like GTA Online gave it the future-proof legs to stand on.Alongside its longstanding cultural relevance, GTA 5 was able to be the game that asked fans to keep coming back for more heists, storylines, and open-world fun.

It really feels as though GTA 6 is already planning for a longstanding sales window similar to GTA 5.
Although no online or post-launch roadmap is apparent for GTA 6’s release, it’s almost definitely going to happen if Take-Two and Rockstar want to mimic the success that its predecessor had.Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if it blows the recently released GTA 5 sales numbers out of the water.
