Paul Mescal’s out ofRidley Scott’s next movie,Jacob Elordi’s in (potentially).
Varietybroke the exclusive that PaulMescalhad to leave Scott’s next film,The Dog Stars. The report states that Mescal “was forced to drop out due to filming Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology.”
For anyone who followed theGladiator IIpress tour, it’s a bit of a heartbreaker. Mescal and Scott seemed to really have a connection and were genuinely excited to work together again right away. So it wasn’t a surprise when Mescal signed ontoDog Stars.
An anthology aboutThe Beatleswill probably do more for Mescal’s career. Especially since it’s four movies, each one focusing on a different member of the band. The cast hasn’t been formally announced, but the rumors are Mescal is Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson is John Lennon, Barry Keoghan is Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn is George Harrison. None of that is finalized, though.
The good news for Ridley Scott is that even though he’s lost one of the rising stars of modern Hollywood, he gained one of the rising stars of modern Hollywood. Scott, who already has 53 director credits in his filmography and just turned 87, has six more projects in the works:

The Dog Starsis an adaptation of a 2012 novel by Peter Heller. This is the book’s synopsis on Amazon:
Hig’s wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley. But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.
The “hopeful radio transmission” feels a bit trope-ish at this point. Especially withA Quiet Place Part IIhaving done that storyline as recently as 2020. But you may argue that the trope isn’t as important as how it’s utilized. I’m sure some people will rush off to readDog Starsbefore the movie, but I’ll wait for the movie to see what happens.
When WillThe Dog StarsCome Out?
Scott’s next film is a biopic aboutThe Bee Gees, calledYou Should Be Dancing. Production had been reported to start on August 14, 2025. There’s a chance it’s ready for a release in Q3 or Q4.
While we don’t know anything about the filming ofDog Stars, reports are that Sam Mendes plans to film The Beatles biopics in July of 2025. That points to Scott filming Q3 or early Q4 for a summer 2026 release.
