It appears as though the long-awaitedResident Evil 4Remakein development at Capcomis about to undergo some big behind-the-scenes changes.

Last year,Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reporteddeveloper M-Two has been leading the development of the project since 2018. However,VGC recently reportedthat the studio has seen its role be “significantly reduced” due to disagreements over its direction according to individuals with knowledge of the project. Capcom Divison 1, an internal team at the company that conducted development onResident EvilandDevil May Crygames, will be taking the reigns of the project from here on out.

Not much is known about the relatively new M-Two studio. They did contribute to the development of last year’sResident Evil 3remake and are said to consist of former developers from PlatinumGames that worked onMetal Gear Rising: RevengeanceandBayonetta 2. According to VGC, the studio’s main function was always to lead the development of theResident Evil 4remake.

VGC reports that the disagreements stemmed from the fact that Capcom’s production team would prefer to see the remake be more faithful to the original with a new take on features, story elements, and environments. M-Two seemingly wanted the game to go down the route of theResident Evil 3remake, which saw the exclusion of some parts that were in the original PlayStation version of the game. This partial reboot of the game can reportedly see the game be pushed back to as late as 2023.

Resident Evil 4is an immensely popular game amongst fans and widely influenced the video game industry after its initial release in 2005. It is partially responsible for saving the series as a whole and is Capcom’shighest-rated game of all time on Metacritic. Being that the cut content in theResident Evil 3remake was generally not well received amongst members of the community, it may be for the best that the game is delayed for a bit longer. Series creator Shinji Mikamisupported the idea of aResident Evil 4remake, saying that “as long as it turns out good” he has no problems with it.
