We are less than two weeks away from the release ofRed Dead Redemption 2,one of 2018’s most anticipated and most ambitious games. While Rockstar’s new game seems like it will be packed to the brim with content, not all of what was initially planned seems to have made it. In a recent interview withVulture,Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser, among other things, discussed some ofRed Dead Redemption 2’scut content.
According to Vulture,Red Dead Redemption 2will clock in at around 60 hours, though about 65 hours of content were planned initially. Both gameplay and story elements have been changed, resulting in this slightly trimmed play-time estimate. On the story side of things, Dan Houser revealed that protagonist Arthur Morgan was supposed to have two love interests, but the development team ultimately decided that “one of them wouldn’t work.”
On the gameplay side of things, Rockstar has also removed some missions for various reasons. Some of them were removed because they felt superfluous and weren’t fun, while others wouldn’t have worked as well on a technical level. Specifically, Dan cites a mission where Arthur Morgan was supposed to fight bounty hunters on a train. That being said, he acknowledges that this is all part of the creative process, and usually happens when making a game:
“They were never going to work technically or be quite slick enough, or they felt superfluous. We removed a mission on a train where you had to deal with bounty hunters, because it was fun at first, but then it wasn’t. This part of the process is always about compromise and horse trading. Everyone always loses bits of the game they love”
