Martin Scorsese at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival 2024

There was a point with “The Departed” where I was ready to throw in the towel. I wanted to make the movie I thought the script was about, and I thought the studio wanted something else… You’re gonna come to me, especially on a project like this, my home turf sort of, and then you’re asking for these actors and this kind of movie?

The New Yorker didn’t give up but chose to work on low-budget films since he was allowed more creative freedom. Scorsese has worked on multiple indie projects, precisely documentaries to keep his creative juices flowing.

Martin Scorsese loves music!

Each person has a preference when it comes to sourcing entertainment. For some, it’s movies, for others is sports and various other things. Martin Scorsese apparently loves music! Not just as a source of entertainment but also because he believes it’s the purest form of art.

Scorsese has worked on musical documentaries for artists like George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Obviously, these were also small-budget projects in which he exploited the creative freedom he received. In the Fast Company, he said,

When I get frustrated with the commercial playing field of feature films, I go to these movies. I have had the need, more and more, to explore the spiritual or religious. Elements of that find their way into my music films. Music is for me the purest art form.

However, Scorsese still gives some time to mainstream projects with his most recent beingKillers of the Flower Moonin collaboration with Apple Studios.
