There was a point with “The Departed” where I was ready to throw in the towel. I wanted to make the movie I thought the script was about, and I thought the studio wanted something else… You’re gonna come to me, especially on a project like this, my home turf sort of, and then you’re asking for these actors and this kind of movie?
The New Yorker didn’t give up but chose to work on low-budget films since he was allowed more creative freedom. Scorsese has worked on multiple indie projects, precisely documentaries to keep his creative juices flowing.

When I get frustrated with the commercial playing field of feature films, I go to these movies. I have had the need, more and more, to explore the spiritual or religious. Elements of that find their way into my music films. Music is for me the purest art form.
