Unless something else wild happens in the world (which wouldn’t be a shock given how 2020 has gone so far), we’re finally slated tosee what Sony has in store with games on the PS5 this Thursday. With over an hour of content said to be packed into this showcase, there will seemingly be a lot highlighted from both Sony’s first-party studios in addition to third-party teams from around the globe.
In a week where rumors and predictions are surely going to run rampant, there are many easy announcements that we can likely assume will be revealed on June 11 given past reports that have come to the surface. Here are five of the most obvious things that I think we’ll have learned about once this PS5 showing wraps up later this week.
Insomniac Reveals NewRatchet & Clank
Hot off of beingacquired by Sony in 2019, I think we’re due to see Insomniac Games appearing during this PS5 stream. While many might think that Insomniac would roll up to show offMarvel’s Spider-Man 2(which is surely in development), I think we’ll instead see a more well-known PlayStation IP rearing its head once again. That’s right, I think we’re due to get a newRatchet & Clankgame on PS5 and it will be formally announced at this upcoming event.
Believe it or not, it has been over four years since Insomniac released the series reboot/remake ofRatchet & Clank, which means we should be set to see more of the beloved Lombax and his trusty robot pal just about any time now. Plus, we’ve alsoheard murmurs in the past few monthsthat Insomniac has actively been toiling away on a new entry in the series for awhile, seemingly indicating that it should be time to finally be unveiled to the public.
And to really put the cherry on top of this prediction, I’ll go ahead and say that this newRatchet & Clankwill also be a launch title for the PS5, too. Let’s hope that it comes true.
Demon’s SoulsRemake andBloodborneRemaster Formally Announced
Given therecent leaks that have come about over the past week, this prediction is pretty straightforward. I believe that the rumored PC and PS5 remaster ofBloodborneand the remake ofDemon’s Soulsfor PS5 are both real and each will be announced during this upcoming stream.
In the case ofDemon’s Souls, this remake has seemed like a foregone conclusion for quite a bit. Bluepoint Games, the developers behind past remakes likeShadow of the Colossus, have beenrumored to be working onDemon’s Soulsfor years at this point. Fans have also been begging for it to make a return, especially since theoriginal game’s servers turned off a few years back.
As forBloodborne, I do indeed believe that the game is set to come to PC and that Sony will reveal this during the PS5 event. If there’s one specific detail I’m still a bit hung up on, it’s the fact that a PS5 remaster ofBloodborneis in the works, too. Given that PS4 games will be compatible with PS5, I assumed that remasters wouldn’t be releasing as often for next-gen systems. Still, I don’t doubt the legitimacy of what we’ve heard already and definitely expect that a PS5 iteration ofBloodbornewill end up appearing on Thursday.
Horizon Zero DawnSequel for PS5 Unveiled, PC Release Date Announced
This is once again another really obvious prediction, especiallygiven what we’ve already heard in the pastabout a sequel toHorizonZero Dawn, but we should almost certainly see Guerrilla’s follow-up installment during this PS5 broadcast. The studio is well into development on what is said to be afull-blownHorizontrilogy, and given that the original game launched over three years ago, now seems to be the right time to see what’s in store for the next installment.
If there is one thing I will go out on a limb with in this prediction, it’s that I believe Sony will use thisHorizon Zero Dawn 2showing as the curtain-jerker for the entire live stream. I believe that this is the first official game we will see running on the PS5 (not taking into accountEpic’s Unreal Engine 5 tech demo). Sony’s going to want to highlight both the strength of its new console and the prowess of its first-party studios, andHorizon Zero Dawnverifiably checks both of those boxes.
Lastly, I think the topic ofHorizon Zero Dawnpopping up will allow Sony to finally unveil when the game isarriving on PC. Currently, all we know is that it’s still set to launch at some point this summer. Expect that broad window to turn into a specific release date over the course of this show.
Resident Evil 8Revealed by Capcom, Set to Release Next Year
I felt like I needed to at least put one third-party prediction on this list, andResident Evil 8seems to be as good of a bet as any. Given Capcom’s track record in recent years to release oneResident Evilgame annually, it stands to reason thatRE8will be launching at some point in 2021. Thecurrent rumorswe’ve heard about the yet-to-be-announced project have indicated as much, too, meaning that we should be approaching a time in which we’d start to learn of the game’s existence. Thursday’s showcase seems like just as good of a place as any to seeRE8formally make its debut.
Plus, it’s worth noting that the past twoResident Evilgames were also revealed at PlayStation events.Resident Evil 2was announced during Sony’s E3 2018 stream whileResident Evil 3was revealed in a State of Play episode last year. The partnership between PlayStation and Capcom is clearly well-established at this point, as is the tendency to revealREtitles at these types of events. This one isn’t a guarantee to happen by any means, but I’ve got a good feeling it will come to fruition.
Price and Release Date for PS5 Will Not Be Given
In a normal next-gen console build-up, we’d start to hear more about price points and release dates around this time of the year. However, this has been anything but a normal next-gen console leadup. Both Microsoft and Sony have remained relatively tight-lipped compared to past console cycles and have instead opted to give the general public a drip-feed of information over a longer period of time.
As such, I wouldn’t expect Sony to reveal the finalized release date or price for the PS5 this week. From the way they’ve been releasing information, either of those specific items seem more likely to be announced in a PlayStation Blog post sometime later this year. This would be like how the newDualSense controllerwas essentially revealed out of nowhere a couple of months back.
Speaking of the PlayStation Blog, it’s also worth noting thatSony has made clear in its latest postthat Thursday’s showcase for the PS5 is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new information on the platform. Even though we’re getting closer to the Holiday 2020 window in which the PS5 will be releasing, we still have miles to go before launch. Buckle up.
