Through intimate moments and strategic planning scenes, We Can End Homelessness promises to shed light on the complexities of homelessness while championing collaborative efforts to create real, lasting change.
A Vision for Change: Prince William’s Homewards Initiative
Homewards, launched by Prince William in June 2023 under The Royal Foundation, is a five-year program dedicated to making homelessness “rare, brief, and unrepeated.” The program focuses on education, resources, and locally led support in six areas across the U.K. and provides $3.8 million in funding to help these communities address homelessness. This initiative aligns closely with the Prince’s philosophy of using his platform to promote positive change.“I think everyone having a right to a safe and stable home benefits us all,” he shared in a clip from the documentary, adding that his royal role should be used to “help people where I can.”
Drawing from Personal Experiences and Family Influence
Throughout the documentary, Prince William references Princess Diana’s influence, recalling her efforts to normalize conversations about homelessness. Diana introduced both William and Prince Harry to charitable work from a young age, taking them to homeless shelters and other outreach programs. Prince William now shares these conversations with his own children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, explaining homelessness during school commutes. His goal, as he shared withThe Sunday Times, is to expose them to diverse realities, instilling in them empathy and a sense of responsibility toward others. (via The Guardian)
In the documentary, Prince William also addresses public criticism. Some critics, like Graham Smith of the anti-monarchist group Republic, argue that homelessness is a policy-driven issue that can’t be resolved through royal patronage. William, however, believes that questioning is part of the process and acknowledges the critiques as motivation.“Criticism drives you forward,”he said.“I think, ultimately, we are pushing forward to deliver change and hope into a world that frankly has had very little of it for a long time.”(via Deadline)
