PokemonPresents just happened for 2024, bringing with it a full twelve minutes of mostly mobile game announcements. The vast majority of these mobile announcements were for pre-existing games, such as the four-and-a-half-year anniversary ofPokemon Masters EX.
I’ve never been too surprised by the success of Pokemon onmobile. This series started on theGameBoy, jumping from handheld to mobile phones is completely logical. However, the biggest mobile announcement from Pokemon Presents saw a different aspect of the franchise move over to mobile, the trading card game, and I’m not quite sure that I understand the reasoning this time.

Digital Goods Just Aren’t The Same
This announcement in many ways was nothing but a teaser trailer, a quick rattling off of the promises this app will deliver. Every day, you’ll get two free packs of official Pokemon cards in digital format, attempting to capture the dopamine hit of opening a pack.
As someone who grew up during Pokemania, the dopamine was helped by actually holding the cards in my hand. Free cardscouldbe enough, but you don’t have to be a cynic to worry about where microtransactions are going to fit in. How many extra daily packs are we going to be able to buy?

You’ll also be able to trade cards, though this feature won’t be available at launch. We didn’t get any information about how this would work, just that it exists. The only thing the community picked out regarding the trading system was that the dude in the trailer traded a Pokemon card to a woman while seemingly on a date with a completely different woman. Not sure if he’s a gamer, but he’s definitely a player.
The battling system wasn’t expanded upon, either. I didn’t even notice it until I rewatched the trailer, with the only info being that they’re going to streamline the gameplay for quicker matches, which makes sense.

The visual quality of the cards was the biggest focus of the trailer. The Pokemon Company reassured us they’d be the same standard as physical cards, and will feature extras like little videos to immerse us further. It’s the most interesting information I learned, to the point where I feel I would have been more easily sold if this app was nothing but a digital card viewer containing every TCG card. Wouldn’t that be neat?
The trading card game is massive, but that doesn’t mean there’ll be an equivalent interest in its digital counterpart. Perhaps, I’m jaded and not quite the demographic they’re aiming for, but for me, I saw nothing of Pokemon Pocket that attracted my interest.
