Industry insiders have revealed some interesting information about the PlayStation 6, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Prime. Despite most of PlayStation’s fanbase still using the PlayStation 4, it seems like Sony’s plan to release the PlayStation 6 is in full swing, however, its release date might kill its hype even before its release.
PlayStation 6 is rumored to be launching in late 2027
In a post onNeoGaf, an insider named Kepler shared some interesting information about Sony’s next console, the highly anticipated PlayStation 6. The leaker claimed that PS6 is “design complete and in pre-si validation already,” adding that an A0 tapeout is scheduled for late this year. A0 tapeout refers to the process of creating the first version of the system’s chip.

This means that PlayStation 6 could be released by late 2027. Sonyconfirmedin February 2024, that PS5 has entered “its latter stage of life cycle,” which seemingly aligns perfectly with this rumored release date of PlayStation 6. This release date also follows Sony’s pattern of releasing a console every 7 years since the PS3. In late 2024, the PS5 Pro was released, but its high price point was criticized. If these rumored release dates are actually true, Sony might be in trouble.
PlayStation 6’s release date could be the reason behind its failure
Sony’s biggest rival, Microsoft, is also reportedly planning to release its console soon but it might be released before PS6, killing its hype. A user on X namedTheGhostOfHope, recently claimed that Xbox’s next console, which will be called the Xbox Prime, would be released in late 2026. This means that Xbox would take the lead, giving players the first tenth-generation console before Sony.

On top of this, Nintendo hasconfirmedthat the Switch 2 will be released in 2025. More information about the console will be revealed on April 2nd, 2025. However, it is confirmed that it will be released this year, putting it ahead of PS6.
Sony, which is also well-versed with handhelds, is also reportedly working on a handheld console that would compete with Switch 2 and Xbox’s rumored handheld device, but as for PS6, it could lose the sales race if it releases one year after the release of the rest of the tenth generation consoles.
