Eiichiro Oda’sOne Piecehas reached new heights of popularity after the Wano arc. Kaido was a strong foe, and there was no way Monkey D. Luffy could have defeated with Gear 4. Then came Gear 5, and Monkey D. Luffy entirely overpowered Kaido and freed the Land of Wano from his tyrannical rule. Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit through Gear 5 and could transmit the rubber property into its surroundings.

Luffy claimed that it was his peak, and so did the fans. But even after defeating Kaido and solidifying his position as one of the Emperors of the sea, there is a massive flaw in his newfound powers. This flaw has been Luffy’s eternal problem and proved to be a massive game changer for his foes. Until he rectifies it, he might still be significantly far from reaching his peak.
Monkey D. Luffy is Still Vulnerable to Slashes
Monkey D. Luffy’s Devil Fruit was thought to be Gomu Gomu no Mi, which turned him into a rubber man. But later, it was revealed that the Devil Fruit is named Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and bears the name of the Sun God, Nika. Since the beginning ofOne Piece, Luffy has always been weak to slashes. His Devil Fruit allows him to deflect blunt objects like cannons, bullets, and physical attacks.

But when it comes to attacks from sharp objects, he has to dodge them to avoid major injuries. Rubber has properties to deflect blunt objects, but it is weak to sharp objects. In the East Blue Saga, Luffy incurred massive injuries while fighting Captain Kuro, Don Krieg, and Arlong. With Gear 5, the same thing is still happening.
Kaido’s Dragon Twister Demolition Breath launched continuous slashes toward Luffy, and he had to dodge them in Gear 5. The same thing happened when he faced Kizaru during the Egghead Island arc. Until he finds some way to get accustomed to the slashes, there will always be a chance of defeat, even if he bears the name of a God.

Monkey D. Luffy Has Always Avoided Foes With Swords inOne Piece
After the East Blue Saga, Monkey D. Luffy was rarely seen to fight people with pirates with swords inOne Piece. During the Alabasta arc, Mr. 1 had Supa Supa no Mi, and Roronoa Zoro had to fight him. Luffy fought Sir Crocodile, who on their first meeting, impaled him with his hook. During the Paramount War, Dracule Mihawk tried to attack Luffy, but he was saved by Sir Crocodile, and later he solely focused on saving Portgas D. Ace.
Another instance was during the Dressrosa arc when he faced Fujitora. While Luffy seems to have overcome his weakness to fire, the sharp slashes are still a problem. There are several powerful foes still left for him to face. Figarland Garling, Supreme Commander of the God’s Knight, is a master swordsman and could be the biggest threat to his Gear 5.

It will be interesting to see how Monkey D. Luffy overcomes this problem and attains his true peak. For the moment, he might have awakened his Devil Fruit, but he is yet to master the form. Maybe Gear 5 might have other sub-forms like Gear 4 inOne Piece.
