George R.R. Martin had always been critical of the changes made by the showrunners ofGame of Thrones, and he was evidently displeased with how these alterations led to the downfall of the series. However, from time to time, the famed author would praise the show for some additional scenes that he thought contributed more substance to the story.

One of the most unforgettable conversations took place in Season 2 when Arya Stark became cupbearer to Lord Tywin Lannister. Surprisingly, this never happened in the novels. She was captured and brought to Harrenhal, but she wound up serving Roose Bolton instead.
George R.R. Martin loved Arya Stark and Tywin Lannister’s conversations
The interaction betweenMaisie Williams’ Arya Stark andCharles Dance’s Tywin Lannister was exclusive toGame of Thrones, and despite the changes made, this arc remained one of the most brilliantly written scenes across eight seasons.

EvenGeorge R.R. Martinwas surprised that he liked the cleverness of that episode. In a panel interview at the Jean Cocteau Cinema in 2015, he said (viaReddit):
I get a lot of credit for writing the books, but David Benioff and Dan Weiss have done such an amazing job in not only translating the books, but also adding additional material. All those scenes between Arya and Tywin are not in the books, it’s something David and Dan condensed.

In the few scenes that Arya and Tywin spoke to each other, thepatriarch of the House Lannisterwas immediately impressed by the young girl’s intelligence. There was also a sense of tension as Arya sought to hide her true identity, with Tywin trying to catch her off-guard as he already guessed she’s posing as a commoner.
Martin was equally thrilled to witness the scene even though it was a major change from his books. He said that “putting Maisie and Charles together in those scenes was just amazing,” and it was “one of the best things” he watched in the show!

There were a few instances whereDavid BenioffandDan Weisssuccessfully modified storylines to streamline the plot, and these were the scenes that fans continued to cherish long after the series’ epic finale.
Maisie Williams loved working with Charles Dance
Arya’s meeting with Tywin was a crucial part of her development as a character, and Williams learned a lot from those moments she shared with Dance. In fact, she mentioned viaMyFanbasethat it was her most favorite scene.
Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Should’ve Been Furious How the Show ‘Sanitized’ Tywin Lannister of His Worst Crime
Interactions like this were what most fans miss aboutGame of Thrones. Not every so often we come across brilliant scriptwriting, but the earlier seasons truly had some of the most genius dialogues and scenes.
Martin was still happy about the show during this season because even though they injected scenes that weren’t in the source material, this additional footage made more sense and provided the story more gravitas.

Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
