In the typically shonen world ofJujutsu Kaisen, the complicated and dark story had the potential to be something even more horrifying. From all the twisted curses to the death count of this one manga, Gege Akutami could’ve madeJujutsu Kaiseninto a full-blown horror manga. Some of the panels prove how this could’ve been the direction but instead, Akutami chose to make it a shonen.

The plot ofJujutsu Kaisenrevolves around curses and the sacrifices that need to be made. The jujutsu sorcerers have basically written their lives away when entering this profession. Elder sorcerers like Gojo Satoru or Nanami Kento are consistently protecting the younger sorcerers. It establishes how horrifying and dangerous it is to live around curses and curse users. It has all the makings for a horror manga but Akutami chose a shonen.
Gege Akutami’s a Horror Genius in the World of Shonen
Several elements ofJujutsu Kaisenare incredibly fear-inducing. From the visuals to the cruel intentions behind the character’s actions, it wouldn’t be a surprise ifAkutamioriginally meant for it to be a horror story.Mahito’s technique, Idle Transfiguration, can distort the body of any human being and the visual style of it makes your gut churn.
The True Meaning of Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 270’s Name is a Horrible Confirmation of Gege Akutami’s Wicked Plans
It borders on body horror and the glee he has on his face makes it all the more terrifying. More than just Mahito himself, there are other curses featured in the manga that are nightmare material.

While the X user might be slandering Suguru Geto along with it, it isn’t entirely wrong. Geto is a formidable villain, originally Gojo’s best friend, but overall, he has an aesthetic that doesn’t terrify you. However, this curse mentioned in the tweet shows how Akutami can draw some truly nightmarish material. So why did they go the shonen route instead?
Would Jujutsu Kaisen Work Better as a Horror Manga?
Akutami is indeed a bit more talented in drawing horror and blending those elements into the plotline. The scene where Jogo burnt an entire restaurant full of customers like it was no big deal was disturbing, to say the least. With 2 chapters left in the manga, there’s no turning back in the shonen route but maybe horror would’ve been the much better route forJujutsu Kaisen’soverall success. However, it seems that the way curses are perceived has a changing perspective depending on who is dealing with them.
Regular people vs Sorcerer interactions being depicted with different atmospheres was a nice touch. Even the same one can go from grotesque horror to fun game of whack a mole depending on who’s dealing with it.pic.twitter.com/15Cx8LojzI

This is rather clever of Akutami and an interesting take on the world ofJujutsu Kaisen. The main characters aren’t as affected by the curses as regular people who have no idea about them would be. Still, you can see those characters suffer greatly, likethe breakdown of Suguru Geto, how Yuji Itadori changed drastically throughout the plot or the countless grotesque deaths. If Akutami had leaned towards horror, maybeJujutsu Kaisenwould have flowed better and not become the mess it is today.
Jujutsu Kaisenis available on VIZ Media for reading and Crunchyroll for streaming.
