The doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates, Tony Tony Chopper, is one of the most unique creatures in the history ofOne Piece. He is actually a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi, which allowed him to transform himself into a human form and a hybrid between Human and reindeer. However, Chopper managed to unlock seven more transformations that gave him an edge in different scenarios.
Chopper’s Devil Fruit is different from other typical Zoan Devil Fruits as it does not fully transform Chopper into a human. He is still able to retain some of his reindeer features, and this has led to manyOne Piecefans questioning the Devil Fruit. Some fans even believe that this might have been a mistake on Eiichiro Oda’s part.
But according to an observation from aOne Piecefan on Reddit, Oda proved his smartness by avoiding Chopper’s complete human transformation. The manga creator saved himself from a lot of racist allegations by making Chopper a mix of reindeer and humans.
Chopper’s Hito Hito No Mi Has A Discrepancy
A normal Zoan Devil Fruit allows its user three different kinds of transformation. The first is the normal human transformation, the second is the animal or creature on which the Devil Fruit is based, and the third is a hybrid form of the creature and the human form. Kaido, Rob Lucci, Yamato, King, etc. are prime examples of this.

However, Chopper was able to unlock the hidden potential of his Devil Fruit using a rumble ball. This allowed him to get five more transformations on top of the basic three that Zoan Devil Fruits provide. On top of that, after the time skip, Chopper does not even need the rumble ball to access these transformations, and he even unlocked one additional ability.
This made his Devil Fruit unique and powerful compared to other Zoan Devil Fruits. There have beentheories about Chopper’s Devil Fruithaving even more potential, but Oda has yet to confirm such assumptions in the upcoming arcs ofOne Piece.
Eiichiro Oda Intentionally Made Chopper’s Devil Fruit Unique
While Chopper’s Devil Fruit is unique, fans have questioned Oda’s intention behind this, and u/Kuma5335 might have figured it out. According to the Reddit user,Eiichiro Odawanted to avoid any allegations about drawing a human form in a specific way that may cause problems with others.
This is also the reason why humans inOne Pieceare so different from one another. Ideally, shonen manga creators have a habit of drawing the most Eurocentric human characters that might be ideal for the story but not always reflect the idea of the real world.
He tried to portray the most basic form of a human figure and aligned it with Chopper’s features as a reindeer to create a combination of both. This was the most ideal way to keepChopper’s essence as a reindeerand also introduce human discrepancies within his physical body.

Also, he focused more on the intellectual aspect of humans and made sure that Chopper had all those aspects within him despite being a reindeer. These aspects are also one of the most important reasons why Chopped became such a great doctor and chose to follow the Straw Hats in their adventure to find theOne Piece.
